So kicking things off with my random reviews, I give you my review of Pixar's more recent film, Brave. Brave is Pixar's take on the whole fantasy and adventure thing that has been recently going on in the film industry with big successes like LOTR and Harry Potter. But can they do any better with this? Let's find out:
So based in the Scottish Highlands, we see our main protagonist Merida (Pixar's first ever female protagonist) get a bow and arrow from her father for her birthday. When she tries to use it, the family are then attacked by a giant demon bear known as Mor'du. Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor escapes while Merida's father, Fergus fights the bear off with the cost of one of his legs. Years later, Merida is now a fully grown teenager who wants adventure and excitement, however her mother forbids it and feels that her daughter should stay true to the traditions of being a princess. This of course causes Merida to take desperate measures to change her mother's mind and ventures out into the woods where she finds a witch who gives her a cake that has the power to change Elinor's mind when she eats it. So as you's come to expect, Elinor does eventually eat it and to Merida's surprise, Elinor turns into a bear and its then a race against time for Merida to prevent her from becoming a real bear before the sun rises using what the witch tells her to do.
So for the most part, the film is focused more around the relationship that Merida has with her mother and it works for the most part. But with it being a Pixar film, you're bound to expect the usual Easter eggs and I did see a few of them so good work on that Pixar. Overall, I feel that Pixar are going the right way with things, especially after the failure that was Cars 2 the year before. It's a great film that deserves at least one viewing and unlike most Disney films that try to be something else other than american (yes 101 Dalmatians I'm looking at you), it makes it a truly Scottish film even if it tries not to. I enjoyed it and I thought the dedication to Steve Jobs (who was one of Pixar's big shareholders and friends) was appreciated and very thoughtful.
