Random Video Game Review: LEGO Lord of the Rings (PS3 Version but can apply to other consoles)

So next in line for the LEGO treatment, comes Lord of the Rings. One of the most critically acclaimed film trilogies we can now see in LEGO form. Is the game worth getting or worth being cast into the fire? Let's find out:

The game has you go into the 3 films FOTR, TT and ROTK, all of which have audio taken directly from the films which is mostly voice acting and music more than anything else. As far as I know, after FOTR is complete, the story then gets split so that you can help Frodo and Sam or help the trio of man, elf and dwarf. On occasions, you would have to change parties as the eye will prevent you from continuing with the chosen party when necessary. The gameplay is your typical gameplay from other LEGO games, but as this is another new franchise for TT Games to work on, there's a few more things added. Each character has an inventory of items which in turn, will help you get through the levels with ease. Characters with a light of some sort will be able to light up dark areas, ones with a bow and arrows will be able to shoot targets and swing on the ones that can be swung on, elves will be able to jump higher than others, wizards can use their staff to build and move objects and characters with the sword of Anduril can destroy milgril objects. Some are more unique than others like Gollum who can climb walls. Like with Batman 2, the game has an open world environment for you to explore all of middle earth so that you can complete tasks for people, collect white and red bricks, use a blacksmith to construct things using the white bricks that you collect and finding statues that reveal quests and brick locations all over Middle Earth. Comparing the map system to how LEGO Batman 2's one was like, the map here is better and much more well developed and makes very clear sense with the locations of things. Of course, it being a LEGO game, there is always something wrong with it and all I can really say on that, is that it can go on for a really long time if you don't know what you're doing and a couple of minor bugs and glitches here and there.

Overall, it's a pretty solid LEGO game that fixes the problems with what happened with LEGO Batman 2's map system and camera angle, and also shows how epic Lord of the Rings is, even if it's in LEGO. A step in the right direction for TT Games and I look forward to playing more of these games in the future. 9/10
