So we come to the start of Phase 2 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and presumably, the last chapter in the Iron Man trilogy. Normally I would do a series review, but because I've seen the other films and have reviewed them, there isn't really much point of it. With a new director, a new villain and some barriers to get over in order to be better than The Avengers, does Iron Man 3 close the series on a high? Let's find out:
After the events of The Avengers, Tony Stark (played once again by Robert Downey Jr) has been haunted by the events of Loki's invasion and while everybody has now moved on, Mr. Stark creates countless Iron Man in an obsessive manner in his mansion which causes friction with his girlfriend and now the new Stark Industries chief, Pepper Potts (played once again by Gwyneth Paltrow). After a pretty darn awesome opening (which is only awesome because of the pop music that's used in my opinion), we cut to New Year's Eve in 1999 where Stark is celebrating the start of a new millennium with his then girlfriend (presumably) Maya Hansen (played by Rebecca Hall) and tries to avoid a crippled scientist called Aldrich Killian (played by Guy Pearce) who wants Stark to back his endeavour Advanced Idea Mechanics. Moving on to the present day, a series of bombings take place which has one of Stark's members of staff, the chief of security Happy Hogan (played by Jon Favreau who served as director for the previous instalments) being caught in one and is put into a coma. As such, Tony Stark becomes very venerable to the organisation behind the bombings and chooses to put an end to their ways, even going as far as nearly losing everything.
Overall, I thought this was awesome. Even though it's mostly a serious film, there's a lot of humour to go about, the 3D effects work just as well as it did on The Avengers and the final battle at the end will become every fans dream, in my opinion. A great start to the next phase that delivers on all levels. 9/10
Oh and for anyone wondering, despite that this was distributed by Disney, the Paramount logo appears, but according to various sources, this will be the last in the cinematic universe to have the Paramount logo. Should also mention that cinemas need to be accurate when it comes to telling people when to put their glasses on because they told me far too early in the adverts when I watched this film. And yes, there is a post credits scene and Stan Lee has a cameo, a very short one that lasts only a few seconds so you might just miss it.
