Now this year's summer blockbusters have been good for some, bad for others. Today I give you my top 10 favourite films of the summer. Bear in mind that I haven't seen every film that was released this summer so your favourite might not be on this list, but unlike last year, I have seen quite a few summer films that for the most part, were indeed good. Now what would count as a summer blockbuster, would be a film that was released during or just before summer starts and it would be a film that has had much anticipation for its release. But enough about that, here are my top 10 favourite films of summer 2013:
10 - The Hangover: Part 3
Now I will mention that when I was working on this list, the number 10 film had to be a film that I enjoyed, but didn't enjoy as much as the other films on this list and there were 2 of them, this one and The Lone Ranger. Both films are enjoyable in some parts, but in the end, I felt that The Lone Ranger was just a bore for the majority of the film with little to no enjoyable moments until near the end of it and before then, it was just Depp's comic relief. Taken that into account, out of both films, I felt that Hangover 3 was the one I enjoyed the most out of the 2 because despite its flaws, it did do the thing that practically everyone wanted, a change of the plot to make it fresh and new and it sort of worked, but not as you would expect. Still, I enjoyed watching it, but as I said in the review, you're better off just watching the first film and leave it at that.
9 - Kick-Ass 2
Despite it being not as good as the first film, its still pretty darn good. As I said in my review, I thought that all the different super heroes and villains were great and seeing Mindy (Hit Girl) at an emotional level was a pretty big thing to happen to her and despite the cringe-worthy moments, I loved it. There's not much else to say here but as I said, its not as good as the first film, but still pretty kick ass in some respects.
8 - The World's End
The 3rd and final film in the Cornetto trilogy that has a sci-fi feel to it, and a whole load of beer. I actually enjoyed this film a lot, but felt that the ending wasn't so great. I didn't mention this in my review because at the time, I was still trying to get around it. Its one of those endings that tries to explain the future of humankind, but is just weird throughout that particular moment. Still, its a great film and worth watching if you're into sci-fi films like me.
7 - Monsters University
For the time being, let's put aside the fact that Pixar are losing their magic, because in all honesty, that's not entirely true. After the failures of Cars 2 and Brave, many people (myself included) wondered if Pixar were losing their magic, but we then get a prequel to one of their more successful films and it turns out to be a great film. There is however a bit of an inconsistency with a line from the original film, but it can easily be missed so don't worry about that. Anyway, this was a good film that clearly shows that Pixar have done their research into things and its an overall enjoyable film for all ages. But of course, some children may not understand the concept of the film as it is something that a young adult does at the age of about 18 or 19 (at least in the UK anyway), but apart from that, its a good film and also one that may have just saved Pixar from its downfall.
6 - Despicable Me 2
It was very clear for a lot of us that because of the success of its predecessor, a sequel would no doubt be in the works. And much like its predecessor, it was a very good film that had improvements done on its visuals and was full of laughs all the way through. But let's face it, we only went to see this because of the minions. I mean, they are right now, the kings of animated comedy and they show a lot of that in this very enjoyable film that people of all ages will love.
5 - The Wolverine
Now let me make one thing very clear. This film is not in league with Man of Steel, Iron Man 3 or the upcoming Thor: The Dark World. Yes it is a superhero film, but its the sort of superhero film that is more of a struggling superhero film without any of those big special effects but it does have a lot of fighting in it. Hugh Jackman's performance is great as always and the idea of him going to Japan, does actually give us closure to some of the stuff featured in the last 2 instalments of the X-Men trilogy. But overall, it is a good film that's definitely worth seeing.
4 - Man of Steel
Now as someone who enjoys the stuff that DC do, I personally had mixed feelings after seeing this film. It is a great film, but there is nothing new that is bought to the table from it. Its just Superman's origins explained in a very confusing and complicated way (I say that because unlike Batman Begins where its all in order, this is in a random order where you see him as a man, then a child, then a man again, then as a teenager, you see where I'm going with this, can't you?) with nothing being changed about it. But despite that, its still very enjoyable, not one of Nolan and Snyder's best films, but its a good film that is for the most part enjoyable. But I'm not so sure about the upcoming sequel though, I mean Batman VS Superman isn't a great idea, believe me.
3 - Iron Man 3
Now unlike Man of Steel, Iron Man 3 was by far better. Its funny, its full of action and I personally like everything that the film has going for it. Of course there is the bit where Stark reveals his address to the world (I mean, who does that?!) and the villain not having any connection with Stark before his appearance (and the shocking twist that he has as well), but those things don't stop this film from being a great film. This is actually the last Marvel Cinematic Universe film to have the Paramount logo as any future films will now be distributed by Disney, for those of you who don't know that is.
2 - Star Trek: Into Darkness
Now despite the 2 half of the film being a reenactment of the original 2nd Star Trek film, this was a very enjoyable film that I'm sure any fan of the franchise will love, despite everything that is wrong with it. Some people have been critical of Cumberbatch's character as the original character from the original Star Trek universe that he is portraying was of Indian descent, but bear in mind that as pointed out in the last film, this is set in an alternate reality so therefore, certain changes had to be made for the series in order for it to be an alternate reality film. Despite that and everything else that's wrong with the film, its still enjoyable and fun to watch by everyone.
1 - Pacific Rim
I absolutely love everything about this film. It has some of the best action scenes that I have ever seen in any film to date and its a nerd fest all around with references to Evangelion as well as other Anime and it has the voice of GLaDOS from the Portal games. What more could you want? And as this is an original film, there is literally nothing to criticise in this film, unlike the other films on this list. Its a lot of fun and anybody who is very much into this sort of thing, will love it. All those reasons make this film, my number one film of Summer 2013.
