So after about a 10 year hiatus, Doctor Who returned to our screens in a feature length made for TV film that was bought to us by the combined forces of the BBC, Universal Studios and Fox. The idea of it was to bring the show back, but unlike before where it was produced in Britain, the show would have been produced in America instead. But due to poor US ratings and also showing off the show to a country that's not too familiar with it, made this the one and only Doctor Who thing to be produced in America (minus Torchwood series 4) and the only one to have the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann) in it (but of course there are a number of spin-off media that allows his doctor to carry on). So with all that said, let's take a look at this TV film while also doing a little review of McGann's doctor as well:
The film begins with the Master (played by Eric Roberts, his 4th incarnation) who has been tried on the Dalek home planet Skaro and has been found guilty for a list of crimes that he committed, The Daleks have him sentenced to death, with his last wish being that his remains are sent to Galifrey by his archenemies, The Doctor (who is still in his 7th incarnation played by Sylvester McCoy). On his way to Galifrey, The Doctor encounters problems with the Tardis and a box that contains the Master's remains, breaks and causes some form of ooze to come out. The Tardis lands in San Francisco on 30th December 1999 and the Doctor gets shot by a gang of gangsters who shoot him accidentally. This has the Doctor go into a hospital where he gets treated. During the night, the doctor regenerates into his 8th incarnation (Paul McGann) and tries to remember his purpose. Meanwhile however, the Master has managed to find himself a body and starts his search for the Doctor so that he can use him and the Tardis eye to destroy the universe (the eye by the way is meant to have been shut closed while the Tardis lives, but when opened, who knows what will happen). Its up to the Doctor to stop him. Now for the part where I talk about McGann's doctor. The personality of this doctor is one that does have a dark side, but is always willing to encourage those around him, to make the right decisions in life, even going as far as hinting about their future. He does have a form of amnesia, but that is to be expected in some respects.
So what do I think of these 2 things? Well the film is OK, for the most part. Its just your typical made for TV film with it relaying on more realistic effects than CGI and at times, it can be a bit predictable on what will happen and a little bit cheesy as well. As for McGann's doctor, I would've preferred to see more of him in action and I thought he did a pretty good doctor, but it isn't one of the greatest by any means. So for both the film and the 8th doctor, this gets 8/10 overall.
