You know, despite my views of this film, I find it great that the director Genndy Tartakovsky is doing other work after the success he had with many of the cartoons that some of us grew up watching (Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack and the original Clone Wars series to name a few) and I have a lot of respect for him and his work. But let's now move on to the film. This film is one that in a way can be similar to The Addams Family in that it has a family of those typical scary monsters that many of us were afraid of back in our youth, but is in no way, a direct copy of it. That said, let's take a look at this film:
So our main star Count Dracula (voiced by a man who has many talents and with his film company Happy Madison (known to make some of the worst comedy films ever), makes a lot of money by insultingly using none of them, Adam Sandler) decides to create a 5 star hotel to home all of the world's monsters and to raise his daughter Mavis (voiced by a woman who had the privilege to go out with the most untalented young singer before he revealed to the world about his sexuality, Selena Gomez) after what happened to his wife. All is well at the hotel and Mavis decides to go out in the world to meet humans and does just that before her father acts out a scenario which then brings her back to the hotel. As this is happening, a human actually comes to the hotel and it isn't long before Dracula tries everything to get him out or at least disguise him to not blow his cover and well the rest of the time, its just then going into a bonding sort of thing.
As someone who likes and respects Tartakovsky and his work, but hates Sandler and Gomez (for obvious reasons), this was an ok film. Its not one that everybody will like as there is just no shutting up as there's just too much noise, but it was a very good idea that in a way, was pulled off quite well, but I will say that this film had a number of directors coming in and out and its possible that Genndy arrived with about half the film already done so its not entirely his fault that the film ended this way, but he has full control on the sequel so that may be better, but we'll see (and there is a Twilight joke which just about sums up why Twilight is such a depressing, boring and annoying series of books and films, which I like a lot). 8/10
