Movie Review - Guardians of the Galaxy

With Disney now having the rights to the majority of Marvel's properties (with the exception of a few that are licensed out to other distrubutors), they and Marvel decided to dust off a few comics based on not very well known Marvel characters and attempt to adapt them into films and whatever else. Now 2 of these properties have been made into films. One is based on the superhero team Big Hero 6 which will serve as Disney's next animated feature and the other is this latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With an all star cast and a lot of hype to live up to, let's see if this film is what critics are calling the best Marvel film ever (so far):

The year is 1988 and a young boy by the name of Peter Quill has lost his mum and gets abducted by things known as Ravagers. 26 years later, Quill (played by the most important, most talented and most interesting person in the universe, not to mention also hilarious, Chris Pratt) travels to the planet Morag where he comes across and steals an orb, only to then be attacked by Korath (played by a man that can control dragons, known as Djimon Hounsou). Quill manages to escape, but a bounty is put on his head for his capture by his Ravager friends who see him as a traitor. On the planet Xander, Quill gets himself in a fight with a female alien called Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana who I last saw on the Starship Enterprise) who was sent after the orb by a powerful alien known as Ronan (played by one of the many Elves in Middle-Earth, Lee Pace). This fight grabs the attention of 2 bounty hunters, a raccoon like creature called Rocket (voiced by a member of the Wolfpack, Bradley Cooper) and a living tree called something, but I can't quite put my finger on it (voiced by a man who likes fast cars and sci-fi things, Vin Deisal). This of course leads the four of them being captured and put into prison where they meet Drax (played by WWE wrestler, Dave Batista. The five of them come up with a plan to escape prison so that they can take the orb to a save place and get money to presumably secure their futures. But it will take more than that to stop Ronan and his plans for the destruction of the galaxy (or some colossal thing like that).

Now going into this, I didn't know a thing about the source material, only that this superhero team exists and it belongs to Marvel so my review is purely based on everything in the film and only the film. It's a very good film that pretty much did what the Avengers did well. The humor is great, the action is great, the production design looks fantastic and if I were to compare it to similar films, this would be in league with some of the best sci-fi films out there. It's that good. Oh and as with typical Marvel films, the mandatory Stan Lee cameo is there and won't be that hard to find as well as a post credits scene that has a certain duck in it. Also it manages to retain continuity with the MCU which is great, but not necessarily needed here. 9/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
