Now generally when you have a show that's all about the origins of a band, sometimes I feel its the music that steals the show with the story and characters not being that great otherwise. However in the case of The Commitments, its actually a very good show that shows all the things that happen when bands are formed like arguments, fights, not getting along, among many other things. So with that said, let's take a look:
So based on the novel of the same name by Roddy Doyle, we meet this friend duo who want to form a band, but lack the knowledge of the music industry. So to solve this problem, they recruit a friend of theirs from school to be their manager and after this manager makes a few changes, he decides that the group should focus on doing soul music and call themselves, The Commitments. The manager then puts an ad in the local paper for people to join the group and eventually, the band is formed and music and drama collide from then on.
Now this is the second time I've been to the Palace Theatre in London (the first time was when I went to see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert a couple of years ago), but this time I had better seats so that's a plus. As for the show, I thought it was great. It may not have many original songs in it, but the songs that are in it are all soul and the actors show that they do have talent and can sing and it was a lot of fun. Only thing I would say is that there are parts that were a bit off putting (as well as a few eye candy moments for both genders) and the encore at the end does drag on quite a bit, but overall, it was a great show and any fan of soul or just music in general will love it for what it is. 9/10
