Random Movie Review - Spy

Over the last several years, we've had many films attempt to mock and spoof the espionage genre with some having success, others having people spilt on opinions and some not as good as others. Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids and The Heat who you may also recognise as one of the teachers in the sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch, gives us his take on a spy film with regular collaborator Melissa McCarthy playing the main protagonist (a first in Feig's films with her) along with a few more recognisable faces. Let's get to it:

Susan Cooper (played by McCarthy) works as a desk bound CIA analyst who guides her partner Agent Bradley Fine (played by Watson from the more recent Sherlock Holmes films, Jude Law in other words) in a variety of missions. He accidentally shoots and kills the only man who knows the location of a bomb that they are desperately trying to find which has Coop guide Fine out of the area to safety. It just so happens that the agency know of the target's daughter Rayna Boyanov (played by Rose Byrne, that chick who helps Xavier in First Class) who may also know of the bomb's location and sent Fine to infiltrate her house. But as a result of this being too easy, Fine is shot dead by Rayna and with her knowing the identities of every agent that the agency have, Susan volunteers to continue hunting down the bomb which her boss Elaine Crocker (played by Allison Janney) reluctantly allow her to do, much to the displeasure of Agent Rick Ford (played by action hero Jason Statham). And so Coop goes into action with colleague and best friend Nancy (played by Miranda Hart) acting as her analyst.

I think its fair to say that McCarthy is good at slapstick comedy which there is a lot of here and I also find Jason surprisingly funny as he spends most of the film making up stories of his so called assignments. It is a funny film, no question about it. But I just hate those villains who are rude, quite arrogant, are spoilt rotten and just rub it in your face that they are better than you. They make me sick. But anyway, its a very enjoyable film and another one where McCarthy is at her best. 9/10
