TV Episode Review - Sleep No More (Doctor Who S9, E9)

This time, Doctor Who goes into the dying genre of found footage things. Let's see how this plays out:

So the episode begins with some guy telling us to not watch it (obviously he knows about the fanbase not being happy with Moffat's decisions and his predictable writing). But this being Doctor Who, I chose to watch it anyway. Anyway back to the story. So this guys explains that the following is footage collected that led up to the point of him talking and then, its found footage time. We meet a rescue team who are sent to find any survivors and take them off the ship. The Doctor and Clara also arrive because of their curiosity (like in most episodes) and they join the rescue team. However little do they know that some blind monsters lurk in the shadows and that they would be their downfall if something is not done.

Now I've seen loads of found footage films such as Blair Witch Project, the Paranormal Activity films and more recently Unfriended and those films have as such set the standard expected in found footage films. Now the Nostalgia Critic of Channel Awesome recently did a editorial on the found footage genre and whether or not its had its day or not. For me, I'd say it has, but there is a lot you can do with found footage. It doesn't always have to be scary, but if it is, it has to work and not use things that other films have used. In this instance, its something new that the show hasn't done before and it captures what made the show scary back in the classic series era. It has little to no music, it has a genuinely terrifying monster in it and it shows all the traits that scary found footage things are known for and of all these things, I think this one is certainly up there as being one of the best in my opinion. It may be a filler episode, but its a filler episode that is worth a watch and you may be surprised with what you see. 9/10
