AC14: Random Movie Review - Antz

So as I've talked about A Bug's Life which came out by Pixar roughly around the same time as this film, it feels appropriate to talk about this particular film seeing as we are in the month where I can talk about family films and not just Disney on their own. So when DreamWorks was formed by Stephen Spielberg and an ex-employee of Disney Jeffery Kazenberg, their main goal was to compete with Disney in their animation department and the first instance of such a thing came in the form of a story about an ant and when you compare Antz to A Bug's Life, it feels very much like the same film with some significant differences such as Antz is more tailored to adults and A Bug's Life to children and some other things. I think I can say that in this battle, DreamWorks wins and the review will tell you why I think that is the case:

So we come to what most films tend to have their setting in, New York. Where we come across an ant colony and meet our protagonist Z (voiced by Woody Allen). Z is a worker ant and longs for the opportunity to truly express himself. His friends are J-Lo ant and Rocky ant (yeah I know they have names but I;m just going to go out and call them by their voice actor's name) and seems to have a love interest in the Princess Sharon Stone ant. Z tries to see Stone again, but to do so, he exchanges places with a solider ant and joins the army and marches along the ranks. However unbeknowest to him and the other ants that one particular ant has a scheme in place to take out the weak ants and bring in more stronger ones and its up to Z to warn everyone of such an occurrence before the bloodbath occurs.

So the reason why I find this to be better than A Bug's Life is really down to the accuracy of the bugs. In A Bug's Life, they are all pretty much the same height with some exceptions. But in Antz, they all look like the size of the actual inscets themselves. The ants are small compared to all the other ants you see and each one has some kind of personality that matches the voice actor. Its a great film and definitely one that started DreamWorks Animation off in a good, but somewhat controversial way. 9/10
