AC18: Random Movie Review - Penguins of Madagascar

So I think I can say that when it comes to DreamWorks, most people would think of their big franchises like Shrek, Dragons, Kung Fu Panda and of course, Madagascar. I mean that is pretty much all you see at any DreamWorks attraction you go to such as the Shrek Tour in London which I went to with a friend last month (it was fun). So following in the footsteps of Puss in Boots, we now get a spin-off to Madagascar featuring the penguins. Now just to address some confusion you may have, this film is not in any way related to the Nickelodeon show, despite the name. So let's not waste any more time and get right to the review:

So the film begins by us seeing 3 of the penguins as children and they successfully save an egg from a group of leopard seals which hatches into the 4th member of the group, Private (reprised by regular DreamWorks collaborator, Christopher Knights). We then go to the present following the third film in the main series where the penguins leave the circus to celebrate Private's birthday and this then begins a series of events which ultimately leads to Private who has been considered the team's secretary/mascot for many years, to find out his true purpose in the team.

Now most people have said that this film is aimed more for kids than families, but to me, I thought it was actually good even though I'm an adult. It follows the whole bright and colourful and humorous manner that the franchise is known for with some fun animation, great jokes all around and its just a lot of fun. Is it as good as the main series? No it isn't, but it does enough to make it stand in its own ground without being overshadowed by the franchise of which it came from. 8/10
