RIP David Bowie and Alan Rickman

In respect to the passing of these two great legends (who are just some of the many celebrities who have passed recently), I am delaying today's Bond post by just several hours to talk about these two. As most of you will know, Alan Rickman was a well known and beloved actor who many will remember from such films as Die Hard, Love Actually, Alice in Wonderland and of course, the Harry Potter films. In fact, there was one point where me and a friend had this idea for a petition for Rickman to be a Sat Nav voice, using his Professor Snape voice because of the way he insults Potter. Guess that's not going to happen (but maybe through archive footage perhaps). As for David Bowie, well he is a rock legend who has done many great songs such as Let's Dance, Peace on Earth (with Bing Crosby) and Diamond Dogs and he too, has been in films such as The Man Who Fell To Earth, Zoolander (cameo) and his most famous one in the fantasy genre, Labyrinth. So what I've decided to do is I will review a film of Alan Rickmans' that I haven't reviewed yet and will tell you about one of Bowie's songs of which I like very much. So let's get started:

Galaxy Quest - In Memory of Alan Rickman
This is one of those films where I haven't seen it in a while and the review is based on memory. Parodies have never really been well received lately and this is likely down to most of them having too much spoofs in them or having one spoof, but the film makers execute it badly. Fortunately, Galaxy Quest is neither. In a parody of Star Trek, we meet a group of people who act in this show called Galaxy Quest which gets cancelled one year. Many years later, the cast of the show (consisting of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and of course Alan Rickman among others who use fictional names in the film as opposed to their own) attend a Galaxy Quest convention full of dedicated fans and then stumble upon some real aliens who mistake the fictional show as documentaries of planet Earth and transport the cast onto their ship in the hopes to relive their Galaxy Quest days which the cast mistake for just being another acting job, but soon realise that its real. I think its fair to say that this film is just a spoof of Star Trek and its fandom and I gotta say, its done really well here. You got the cool smooth talking captain, the actor who hates the fact that he is only known for being the odd one out in the show and all the other things as well. It is a good film and for a film starring Alan Rickman, its a great one at that. 9/10

Space Oddity - In Memory of David Bowie
So of all David Bowie's songs, this is the one I like the most. Its heartwarming, has a science fiction element to it and its a good song to use at a time of reflection. Of course he has other great songs, but for me, Space Oddity will always be the best song for me. I especially love the guitar solos you hear throughout the song and I'm the sort of person who would normally not be into guitar songs, but David Bowie is an exception as he was great with the guitar. It is a real shame that he is no longer with us, but his songs will always be better than say Justin Beiber any day or even current pop songs in general.
