Video Game Review - LEGO Marvel's Avengers

The chances of us getting Marvel or Star Wars content into LEGO Dimensions seems to be pretty slim in the sense that TT Games have taken the easy way out and would instead give us 2 fully fledged out games based on those two properties. The first which is this one, is Marvel and is based on the Avengers side of the MCU (with references to Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of SHIELD throughout). The second which comes out later this year, is Star Wars and will be based on The Force Awakens as well as giving us some story content based on the things that take place between episodes 6 and 7. I am disappointed in TT for choosing to go this path, but given that LEGO Dimensions is a big game already and no doubt has a lot of figures that can easily help you complete the game, this only seems fair in that regard because to have Marvel and Star Wars in a game like that, you're going to need more than just adding figures and an open world hub for the sake of it. But enough about that, let's go Avenging:

So the game follows the storyline of the two Avengers films Avengers Assemble (that's the UK title by the way) and Age of Ultron while also having some content based on some of the solo Avenger films, specifically Captain America: The First Avenger and Winter Solider, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. But its not all MCU as the game also brings in many characters from the comics and other media as well, including variants of the main Avenger characters. It plays out more or less like any other LEGO game before it with each character having their own abilities which are needed for 100% completion in finding minikits, character tokens as well as saving Stan Lee and filling up the stud bar. Outside of the main story, you can explore various hub worlds to take on side missions and find golden bricks among other things. The game as always, can be played with up to 2 players locally and there are a total of over 200 characters to play as and each one can team up with another to perform a team up move in game. Plus like with Batman 3, this game has a Season Pass that will allow you to download and play more levels based on other Avenger characters as well as some more characters to play as too. And following previous LEGO games, the voice acting is archive footage from the films as well as some original dialogue made for the game.

TT Games have made a number of great LEGO games in the past 10 or so years, but unfortunately, LEGO Avengers is not one of those games (at least until the DLC comes out anyway). Its a step down from what we got in the last LEGO Marvel game in that its focused solely on The Avengers and is kind of restricted to just the MCU. But to be honest, there is so much you can put into one game, that you realise that there has to be some restrictions here and there. But for what it is, its a fun game and does well to stay true and faithful to the Avengers as well as elements of the MCU in general. 8/10
