Anyone remember a time when Batman wasn't taken as seriously as he is now? Me neither (but you'd be expecting that as I'm a 90s kid), but it happened. Adam West as some of you may know, was one of the first actors to portray Batman on the small screen and unlike the likes of Keaton, Conroy, Bale and Affleck, his take on it is not serious. In fact, its considered camp and funny. Think Batman and Robin, but less awful. The TV series he did was well recieved and its iconic for its theme song and all the shinanagans that go on. It was very successful that it managed to get its own feature film and this is really the ultimate camp Batman. Doesn't get any better than that (the camp side at least). So having reviewed many superhero films while doing this blog, let's look at one of the very first of its kind:
Now just a disclaimer that I haven't watched the TV series of which the film is based on so my review is based on the film as a stand alone.
So we get Batman (played by West) and Robin (played by Burt Ward) who set out to stop the shinanigans of the United Underworld which just so happens to be a gang of Gotham's most powerful villians Joker (played by Cesar Romero), Penguin (played by Burgess Meredith), Riddler (played by Frank Gorshin) and Catwoman (played by Lee Meriweather) who devise a plan to put the world at risk leaving only the dynamic duo to stop them. However unlike what we're used to these days, how it plays out can be seen as camp, funny, but above all, light hearted and a little bit over the top.
To be honest, I expected nothing else from a film like this. Its exactly how I thought it would play out with its goofy moments, its humor, its campness and other things as well. Before Keaton came around, this really was what people thought Batman was like. Nowadays, we can all take him seriously thanks to some incredible actors, great writing and great stories to be told. 8/10
