So looking at Disney's history, Snow White was the first official Disney Princess, Pinocchio gave us the famous "When you wish upon a star" song that has since become the main theme for the Disney logo and Cinderella gave us the official Disney castle that would become its official logo. So while Peter Pan didn't give us anything significant like those things, it did however manage to successfully give its own characters a spin-off series which has done quite well in recent years so that's something. But like every Disney film, many other versions of this story were made and to be honest, Disney's take on it is the best one for me. So let us fly to Never Land as we look at this film:
The film begins in London during the early 1900s. We meet a group of children who one night are all whisked away by one Peter Pan (voiced by the late Bobby Driscoll) who uses the power of magic to help them fly and together with his sidekick Tinker Bell, they journey to Never Land. For years, Peter's rival Captain Hook (voiced by the late Hans Conried) has wanted to take revenge on him for cutting his hand off, but always seems to fail when a crocodile with a clock inside it hunts him down along with Pan being able to thwart him every time. But the arrival of the children from London may give him that chance, but for those of you who haven't seen the film yet, don't count on it.
It wasn't easy trying to do this review as the plot is a bit all over the place. It kind of feels like there is no plot and the film is more about marketing Pan as a person people can look up to. That isn't a bad thing as such, but I expect Disney to have done better. Still the film has aged quite well over the years and it still amazes me how great the artwork in Disney's animated films tend to be. Its not the best Disney film out there, but its one that despite its flaws, I will quite happily watch again and again and who knows, maybe I will take a look at the Tinkerbell films in the future. We shall see. 7/10
