AC24: Random Movie Review - The Sword in the Stone

Well its Christmas Eve so today marks the end of another set of Advent Calendar themed posts and I hope you guys enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed making them. So to wrap it up for another year, today's review is on Disney's 18th animated film and the final one released before Walt's passing. And for what it is, its actually one that is very entertaining and magical to a certain extent. Well let's see if we can pick up the sword ourselves as I review The Sword in the Stone:

Set in the Dark Ages, a king of a kingdom dies and with no heir to the throne, a sword in a stone is put in his place and anyone who pulls said sword can become the new heir to the throne. Many years later, we meet Arthur (voiced by three actors Rickie Sorensen, Richard Reitherman, and Robert Reitherman) who accidentally lands himself in the house of a wizard called Merlin (voiced by the late Karl Swenson) and Merlin declares himself his tutor and for the rest of the film (at least until the actual sword in the stone comes into play), Merlin home teaches Arthur all sorts of subjects leading to fall outs, confusion and all other forms of teacher to student relationship stuff.

I think the biggest problem I have with this film is that most of it is spent on us getting used to Merlin and Arthur, meanwhile the sword in the stone is just sitting there gathering dust. I mean it probably would've caused the film to end quickly, but I guess the film makers wanted to have people wait until the end in that regard. But anyway, the film despite that major flaw is very funny and enjoyable. I wouldn't exactly say it aged well, but the duel the witch and wizard have later on in the film is probably the best thing about the film. So overall, not the worst Disney film, but at least it gave us the thing Walt has always wanted to have in his films and that is magic. He'll be remembered more for his other films, but at least this one reminded us of what he is passionate about when it comes to making films and whatever Disney choose to do for their future films, its good to know that they are in the safe hands of Bob Iger who has made it the great company that Disney are today. But none of this would've happened without the legend himself, Walt Disney. 9/10
