Random Video Game Review - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

So after eventually buying myself the Nintendo Switch, I decided to finally do a full playthrough of a Legend of Zelda game having previously only ever played the games for a limited period of time. I can honestly say that for a Zelda game that's open world, its pretty damn impressive. Yeah it does borrow elements from other open world games, but this could very well be Nintendo finally upping their game and doing things that other companies and brands are doing. So let's grab our gear and journey into the world of Hyrule:

So without going into the timeline too much as I personally find it too confusing anyway, an amnesiac Link awakens from a place called the Shrine of Resurrection and a female voice guides him to a Hyrule that has gone back to medieval times and there, Link meets an old man who upon helping Link adjust to this world, reveals himself as the restless spirit of King Rhoam (voiced by Bill Rogers) who explains to Link that a variant of Ganon called Calamity Ganon has been growing in power since his awakening many years ago and its down to Link to stop him by finding the Master Sword and releasing the four Divine Beasts with the spirits of their champions from Ganon's control in the hopes to destroy him. So as you play the game, you come to realise that this is largely an open world game with everything that other open world games have such as fast points, main missions and side missions, plenty to do and areas to explore and more. It also retains some RPG elements that the games have been known for which can help in making Link a better and more equipped warrior. It takes full advantage of the Switch (or Wii U Gamepad if you got the game on Wii U) which you can use the motion sensing capabilities of as an alternative to using the traditional thumbstick to move the camera angles around. Depending on which of the several abilities Link gains over the course of the game, it can also be used to target objects and so forth as well. Plus the game also lets you use amiibo which depending on the amiibo in question, can give you supplies or even exclusive stuff like Link's iconic horse Epona. The graphics look like a combination of the games that use a realistic Link as well as the ones that use Toon Link which for the most part, looks great.

This is pretty much what every Zelda fan has been waiting for. A big open world game with plenty to do and not restricted to anything due to limitations. In other words, this is what a Zelda take on Skyrim would be and its great. Its been regarded as one of the greatest games of all time and its not the first Zelda game to get such a title, but it certainly raises the bar high for future games in the series. And for a launch title for the Switch, its a great game to kick off the games coming for it. I know most Zelda games take a long time to be made, but it shows that Nintendo do take gaming seriously and spend a lot of time making games to get them just right, even if it has DLC. I like the game a lot and if you like games like this, you won't be disappointed. 9/10
