Random Movie Review - La La Land

So this was the film that swept the Oscars, eh? Well its not that surprising when you have two great leads like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as well as the fact that its a musical and last time I checked, musicals tend to win awards (sometimes for the wrong reasons, but there you go). So why is it so good? Let's find out:

Our film begins in a traffic jam on a Los Angeles highway with the opening number "Another Day of Sun". The day's events are then shown from the perspective of aspiring actress Mia Dolan (played by Stone) who has a moment of road rage and fails at the audition she went to. That night, her roomates take our out to a party to cheer her up, only for her car to be towed. The perspective is then shifted to the man who Mia had a moment of road rage with, struggling jazz pianist Sebastian Wilder (played by Gosling). At a gig, he slips into a passionate jazz improv despite the owner of the resturant he's performing at (who by the way is played by J.K. Simmons) telling him to stick to the setlist of traditional Christmas music. Mia overhears his music and moved by it, she goes to the resturant, only to see Seb get fired and a complement attempt she tries, fails. And then the rest of the film is the two of them enjoying each others company, unaware of the obvious love for one another, but both hoping to get what they want in life.

So I know that there are some people I know who for whatever reason, couldn't get into this film which does happen from time to time. However, I feel that the critics are right in saying its fantastic. All the musical numbers are well thought out, Stone and Gosling's chemistry is great and the build up to what they could've been together is actually pretty sweet and very romantic to some extent. Yes its not everybody's cup of tea despite the awards and acclaim it has received, but if you like musicals and films with at least some originality if any, then this film is definitely worth your time. 9/10
