So as anyone who has Netflix will know, there is a lot of films on there. Many of them I have never even heard of before. So naturally in preparation for the month of Halloween, I watched a few of the horror films on there and while this year's set of October reviews are not all completely in the horror genre, at least I'm giving you some even if its not for all of this month. So anyway, this film I came across on Netflix can be seen as a film that tells you that what you can't hear can very well lead to bad things happening. Plus it can also be used to study people who are deaf and what the consequences are for said things. So let's get to it:
So we meet this girl called Maddie (played by Kate Siegel who was also one of the writers) who one day temporarily lost her hearing and voice after receiving a form of Meningitis and eventually lost them permanently when surgery to get the Meningitis out went wrong. One night at her house, her friend (played by Samantha Sloyan) returns a book to her, only to then seek urgent help before being stabbed to death by a masked man (played by John Gallagher Jr.) who quickly realises that Maddie is deaf and begins to taunt and stalk her, making sure that she can't escape or call for help. In doing so, he cuts the power and hurts her leg by shooting an arrow from his crossbow which limits her options. To survive, she must consider her options and execute them before its too late.
This is a very clever horror film. It plays on the idea of not being able to hear while a killer is on the loose and what options does one have in a critical situation. Its very clever, light on jumpscares and definitely a slasher/psychological horror that's not to be missed. 9/10
