AC15: Random Movie Review - Monsters VS Aliens

So many years ago, we had a set number of films released that were known as monster films. No not the Universal Monsters (though they did make the monster genre popular), but instead we got some pretty bizarre monsters films like Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman, The Blob, The Fly and many others. Another thing that made these classic films great was the whole 3D thing and when DreamWorks Animation saw the potential of the then new 3D technology, they jumped the gun by making a film that reminds us of how many of us became nerds in the first place thus giving the film some nostalgia value while retaining DreamWorks Animation's style of humour. But it also fell into a category that's best described as being a parody which the head of the company Jeffrey Katzenberg ultimately wanted to move away from, following how those films as well as this one performed internationally (and more info on this can be found on Wikipedia). But anyway, despite that I'm certain that there is something to enjoy here so let's get right to it:

The film begins with the wedding of Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) and weatherman Derek Dietl (voiced by Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd). As things go according to plan, the wedding gets interrupted by an asteroid that hits Susan and makes her grow to 50 feet and he hair goes white as an added side effect. She then gets tranquilised and transported to a secure top secret government facility where she meets other monsters like her such as Dr. Cockroach P.H.D. (voiced by House's Hugh Laurie) who is a literal cockroach and also a mad scientist, B.O.B. (voiced by co-founder of Point Grey Pictures, Seth Rogen) who is basically a one eyed blob without a brain, Insectosaurus (who do to the nature of the character is not voiced by anyone) a giant 350 feet mutated bug and the so called Missing Link (voiced by Bojack Horseman and LEGO Movie Batman himself, Will Arnett). She is informed by the man in charge, General W.R Monger (voiced by 24 and Designated Survivor's Kiefer Sutherland) that she and the other monsters are under his care and that they will be let out should any Earthly threats occur. As such, an alien invasion occurs and Monger goes to convince the president (voiced by chat show host Stephen Colbert with the likeness resembled in the film) to release the monsters in the hopes to stop this alien threat. But there may be more that meets the eye (which can be literal at points).

So I think the film managed to do what it set out to do with paying homage/tribute to the monster films of old and reminding us older nerds of how we became nerds in the first place. Plus it takes full advantage of the 3D aspect which generally works well for most animated films anyway. Its also funny and serious where it needs to be and is a very enjoyable watch. The CGI looks a bit dated, but it still looks great. So in a way, it can be seen as a classic and it can almost certainly be enjoyed by many people. Honestly there isn't much to criticize here other than the CGI and anyone who enjoys monster films no matter how old you are, will most definitely find enjoyment in this. 8/10
