AC6: Random Movie Review - Boxtrolls

So next up from Laika is a film about a certain type of troll who for whatever reason, where boxes. Now of the four films that Laika has done so far, this one despite having an all star cast, is their worst reviewed film. But that doesn't mean that its bad and I'm a firm believer that its best to judge the film for yourself when you get a chance to see it. Of course my reviews are just here to guide you like with the critics. But just because people have given it a lower rating to other films, doesn't mean that its a totally bad film. But anyway, let's look at the shenanigans these so called Boxtrolls get up to:

Set in the Victorian era in the fictional town of Cheesebridge (I know a certain inventor would love to come here just by what the name is alone), rumors spread of some trolls who have kidnapped and killed a child. The city's leader (voiced by Jared Harris, one of the Mad Men) hires a pest exterminator (voiced by acting legend Ben Kingsley) who agrees to get rid of the Boxtrolls (named that because they wear boxes instead of clothes) in exchange for getting a seat on the city's cheese loving council despite being allergic to cheese (yeah I don't know how that works either). The truth of the matter however are that the Boxtrolls are peaceful creatures who scavenge throughout the city and night for discarded items to make inventions with. Living among them is a boy called Eggs (voiced by a member of the House of Stark, Issac Hempstead Wright) who having learnt of the city's hate for Boxtrolls, goes on a quest to stop the pest exterminator at all costs as well as the pursuade the city that the Boxtrolls are no threat.

Despite the low ratings, this film is actually pretty fun. Everyone in the cast play their parts well and even sound like they are enjoying every second of it. And while there isn't anything completely wrong with the film, it can be a bit disturbing in parts. In other words, this film should've probably got a higher certificate than what it got just based on the disturbing nature of the later parts in the film. But other than that, families will enjoy this and you get your money's worth. 8/10
