Even though this film is based on a novel, most people will know it for being the one film where Leonardo DiCaprio finally won that Oscar. Having done almost everything such as being on the ship that an iceberg destroyed, doing bit of modernised Shakesphere, flying a plane while kicking in his OCD and entering dream after dream after dream, its this film that got him the Oscar he deserved. Of course he's won many other awards in his career, but the Oscar is always going to be the big one. So how did he do it? Let's find out:
In the year 1823, we meet a frontiersman called Hugh Glass (played by DiCaprio) who is guiding trappers who belong to Andrew Henry (played by General Hux himself, Domhnall Gleeson) through an unrecognised territory. During a hunt with his half-Pawnee son Hawk (played by Forrest Goodluck and yes that is his name, no joke or pun intended), Hugh then helps the camp flee from an attacking group of the Arikara tribe and guides the survivors to Fort Kiowa. Along the way, lots of dangers await that push him and his group to the limit which leads to some pretty shocking revelations and some gross and brutal moments.
So all Leo had to do was to suffer the wrath of bears, eat raw meat and do other gross and brutal things and in the end, he got that Oscar. Anyway this film is pretty good. The continuous shots are excellent, the acting is very good which I expect nothing less of from the big names in the film. The music while light, is very emotionally driven and helps the story well. And its just a great film all around, but be prepared to see Leo do things he wouldn't normally do all because he wanted that Oscar. 9/10
