Video Game Review - Detective Pikachu

So Pikachu as a detective. This should be interesting. So the DS and 3DS have had a rich history in all things detective work having had a majority of detective games from the likes of Level-5 and Capcom among others. Now as far as Pokemon is concerned, many of us have always know them to speak their own names rather than like us. Then Mystery Dungeon played on the idea of the Pokemon talking like us and now we have a game where Pikachu is a detective. An interesting concept and one that most of us didn't expect to see so let's have a look:

The game follows a Pikachu (voiced by Kaij Tang though I'm not sure if that's the japanese version or the english dub) who has the ability to talk like a human being. He is also very inteligent and claims to be a great detective. He eventually bumps into a boy named Tim (voiced by Khoi Dao, again not sure if japanese or english dub) who is able to understand him and together they set out to solve a variety of cases involving other Pokemon. So in all the cases the duo tackles, you can assess the scenes by walking around, finding clues and interviewing people and figure out how it all went down. Pretty simple if you ask me.

So the game is pretty easy and most completionists will have no problem completing it. But as it is with many 3DS games now, it seems that Nintendo are no longer interesting in 3D elements which is a shame seeing as it was made for the console so saying its for 3DS but doesn't do any 3D stuff can be quite misleading. Also Pikachu having a deep voice may go down well for comedy purposes, but it can be quite distracting from your average Pikachu just saying his name. The story is ok, but if you are after that next great detective game on 3DS, it doesn't really do much in the way of innovation and after having spent time playing Professor Layton and Ace Attorney games, I was hoping that Nintendo would be able to make its mark with this game. Oh well, but Pokemon fans will enjoy it for sure. 6/10
