So I've tackled a number of psychological films largely in the horror genre and today, we are looking at another one. So since Thor: The Dark World, I've not seen much of Natalie Portman and in some way, either she fell off the radar or I just haven't been seeing her recent films. So here we are with Annihilation, another one of those "based on a book" films and to be honest, its visuals are very pretty. So let's see if it was worth watching Portman again after what feels like a long break:
So the film starts off with cellular biology professor and former US Army solider Lena (played by Portman) having a debriefing of a mission to investigate an anomaly called "The Shimmer" of which she and her husband Kane (played by Lucius Malfoy himself, Oscar Issacs) are the only survivors. As we would come to expect, this film is about exploration and survival where no one is safe and only a handful will survive what lies ahead.
This is a pretty good film. Its visually beautiful and full of colour and the music is very weird, but very innovative to an extent too. It will raise questions about the challenging themes that this film presents, but I guess in a way, that will make the film memorable. The actors all play their part well and it was a risk that was worth taking. Though I'm with the director when I say that its better being seen on the big screen than on the small screen. The former is what the USA got while the latter is what the rest of us got (that is if you have Netflix or not). Still, its a very good film and worth at least one watch if any. 9/10
