TV Season Review - A Series of Unfortunate Events (Season 2)

After a year's break,  A Series of Unfortunate Events (as unfortunate as it is) is back. As always, the tagline tells us not to watch it as its depressing and pretty sad. But we watch it anyway. So what the series has been able to do so far that the film failed to do, is that it has gone beyond the film and manages to allow time for each of the books to be fleshed out with each book serving as two episodes. It is what it is so unless you rather read something that's more upbeat than this, let's dive in:

So picking up from where season 1 left off, the Baudelaires are sent to an unpleasant boarding school with Count Olaf (reprised by Neil Patrick Harris) hot on their trails and comes up with schemes to steal the Baudelaires' fortune. This then leads to another series of unfortunate events that involves the previously mentioned school as well as a tower block in a city, a village which has strict rules, a pretty hostile hospital and a carnival freak show. Plus we find out who are the V.F.D. as well as an appearance from Nathan Fillion. All building up to a literal cliff hanger while narrated once again by Lemony Snicket himself (reprised by Family Guy's Patrick Warburton).

Season 2 is an adaptation of books 5-9 and although I haven't read the books myself (but know of someone who does) but have seen the film, its still just as dark and unfortunate as it gets. We get to see some new characters and the season also serves as a turning point for the main characters (which won't be spoiled for those of you who haven't seen it yet). Each of the stories do start to get predictable on how it will all end and I wonder if most of the grown up characters are genuinely stupid in not figuring it out that its Count Olaf in disguise. Also, the scenes can be too fast at times especially seeing as we get all these new characters, but not quite enough screen time for them to shine in. But despite all of that, its still as unfortunate as its going to get with some very good acting, musical numbers, funny moments and more. And there will be a season 3 which we will unfortunately be looking forward to so yeah. 7/10
