Random Movie Review - Coco

So before we look at the highly anticipated and long awaiting sequel to The Incredibles, let's talk about Pixar's previous film. So anyone who lives in Mexico or has visited the country will know of a well known holiday called Day of the Dead of which they celebrate in October around Halloween time. As the name implies, its for families and friends who remember, celebrate and pray for their loved ones who are no longer around and just reflect on their lives and what they meant to them. The film is based on that holiday with a somewhat original story to go with it. So let's get right to it:

Many years in the past, we learn of a musician who once sang songs to his titular 4 year old daughter Coco (voiced by Ana Ofelia Murguia and as you can tell, the majority of the cast are of Mexican descent). But one day he leaves and never returns, thus prompting his wife Imelda (voiced by Alanna Ubach) to banish music from the family. Many years later when Coco becomes a very old lady, her great grandson Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) wants to be a musician but due to the family ban on music, this becomes a challenge for him. But when he accidentally breaks a picture frame to find that his great-great grandfather is a musician himself, he sets out to find a way to meet him and ends up in the Land of the Dead. He meets his ancestors and sets out to find the famous musician Ernesto de la Cruz hoping that he can receive his blessing with music being one of the conditions, but unaware that he may not be what he seems to be.

One thing I will say is that despite America having a pretty corrupt president who hates Mexicans and wants to build a wall around their country, its good to know that not all Americans hate Mexicans. So yeah the film is pretty good. Its a visual spectacle, everyone acts their parts well and it remains respectful and faithful to Mexican culture. If you like music and Mexico, then chances are that you will enjoy this film for all its worth. Its probably won't change the mind of the Donald on his opinion of Mexico, but its a very good film with lots of heart and fun to be had. 9/10
