So after I watched American Idiot, the next musical based on an album by a famous musician that I would see, is this one. Now despite it being largely based on a well known album by Meatloaf, the show actually uses music not just from him, but from other musicians as well who have all worked with music producer and lyricist Jim Steinman. This show has so far received rave reviews so its bound to be a blast I'm sure. So let's break out of our bodies and fly away like a Bat Out f Hell:
Loosely based on the album of the same name, the show is a version of the Peter Pan and Wendy story set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan which people now call Obsidian. We meet a man called Strat (played by Andrew Polec) who is the forever young leader of a group called The Lost (not to be confused with a similar group in the Grand Theft Auto series). He has fallen in love with a teenage girl called Raven (played by Christina Bennington) who wants to be free of a life of being locked in the prison that she calls home. However, her abusive father and ruler of the Obsidian Falco (played by Rob Fowler) wants to keep her inside where he can see her and does everything he can to make sure The Lost get what he believes they deserve in an attempt to keep his daughter at bay and to keep order in the Obsidian.
So a few things to make clear here. It will have a lot of strobe lighting, flashing images and a lot of adult content (but nothing like 50 Shades so you'll be fine here). Pretty much all you would expect to see from a show based on a very popular album. Its a lot of fun, well acted and pretty darn intense and epic when it needs to be. It can also be quite bizarre at times too. The ambience especially makes me feel like I'm in hell as its being played. Plus expect a few fourth wall breaking moments too. If this was a film, it would be a bloody good film I think. Let's hope some studio executive picks it up. 9/10
