Video Game Review - Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Well its been a year so here we have our next Assassin's Creed game. So the last game explored the origins of the whole Assassin and Templar war that the majority of the series has touched upon greatly and now we're getting another prequel game set before Origins. And with it being the most decision based game of the series so far, its good that Ubisoft are exploring ways to keep the series fresh and new for each experience. So let's get to it:

Set in Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War (aka the events of the 300 series), players can play as either a male or female protagonist and can choose to fight for either the Peloponnesian League or the Delian League (led by Sparta and Athens respectively) while also trying to restore the protagonist's fractured family following a near death event they had with their sibling. Gameplay is largely the same as it was in Origins so really not much to talk about there apart from the obvious thing of the game being set in a different time period. The naval side of things from that game is expanded upon here to give us a more Black Flag like experience. But the overall experience has more empathises on action RPG style of gameplay. This includes things like decision making (timed, game changing and otherwise), multiple endings, expansive quests (story related or otherwise) and the chance to pursue romantic relationships with NPCs. The notoriety system which has been used in past games, makes a return with a bounty system in place so you can rise up in the ranks as you battle each mercenary that comes after you. But of course the newest and biggest thing in the game is the ability to make ones influence over a nation go down in an attempt to go to war and give either Sparta or Athens power over that nation.

So plenty to do in what has been another great game in the series. It follows a similar route to Origins in that no one refers to themselves as templars or assassins and use their own roles in that regard which is good. Its also a lot more interactive than in previous games in that it gives players a chance to forge their own path with the developers leaving it down to the players to choose their own ending. Its great fun, a lot more colourful too and can probably be put down as the most interactive game of the series due to how the story is decision based this time. Well done Ubisoft! 9/10
