So I figured that as I tend to review a few Disney classics every time December comes and no other time of the year, I felt it was time to change that so I'm now going to review as many as I can as the year goes on. So here we have the 24th classic (though this can vary depending on your home country) which like most Disney films until they started throwing in some original ideas, is based on a book of sorts. Its seen as one of their most underrated films yet somehow got itself a direct to home media sequel (which I probably won't review any time soon) and also has one of the most saddest moments in Disney's long library of films. So let's get to it:
So following a young red fox later known as Tod (voiced by the legend that is Mickey Rooney) being orphaned, an owl called Big Mama (voiced by Pearl Bailey) arranges for him to be adopted by a kindly farmer named Widow Tweed (voiced by Jeanette Nolan) who goes about raising him much to the annoyance of her neighbour; a hunter called Amos Slade (voiced by Jack Albertson). Slade has also adopted an animal, a puppy whom he calls Copper (voiced by another legend, Kurt Russell) who he hopes to raise as a hunting dog like his other dog Chief (voiced by Disney regular Pat Buttram). Both the fox and the hound (oh the irony!) become the best of friends despite warnings that as time goes on they will become enemies.
For what it is, it is a good film from the house of mouse. Its not as memorable as many of their other works. But it has its charm, some heart and some other good stuff too. I guess what really bothers me and others who have seen this film is the dark side of it that's constantly building up as the film goes on. I mean sure it may come across as a family friendly film, but the second half just makes things a lot more real than I would like and it can be quite heart breaking too. Still as one of the underrated classics, its a good one but probably best to watch it in the right frame of mind. 8/10
