Many of you know that I'm a big fan of films with giant monsters in them and yet somehow, I failed to miss this one when it initally came out. Today I am going to rectify that as we look at a giant monster film that actually isn't as overly intese as films like Pacific Rim, Godzilla or any one of the Transformers films. It also aims to have a slight sense of nostalgia going for it which is always a good thing for me as someone who loves nostalgia (well just as long as it has some kind of meaning to it). So let's look at what can arguably be called one of the underdog films of 2016:
The film focuses on an unemployed writer called Gloria (played by Nolan veteran, Anne Hathaway) who is also an alcoholic. As a result of her obscure behaviour, her boyfriend Tim (played by that mutant who was also the Beast at one point as well as a wax figure, Dan Stevens) decides to have her evicted from his apartment which leads her to travel back to her hometown of New England. There she reunites with her childhood friend Oscar (played by Jason Sudeikis) who helps her furnish her new home while also offering her a job at his bar to help her get by of which she accepts. As time goes on, Gloria ends up on a playground which somehow causes a giant reptilian monster to manifest in Seoul which she eventaully realises that she is in control of and resolves to not harm those living in Seoul. But it turns out Oscar has his own giant monster in the form of a robot and due to his violent behaviour, Gloria resolves to stop him terrorising the area at all costs which naturally leads to some fights and arguments and so forth.
As a giant monster film that doesn't go on the intese route like most of these films do, its actually pretty good. It largely focuses more on the human characters that control these monsters which I guess adds some much needed humanity in what would otherwise be seen as mindless giant monster fun with that being the main focus over everything else. I think its great and Anne Hathaway does a great job in this film. I just wish I saw it sooner. 9/10
