So DC have joined Disney in the whole video streaming gig and they begin their service with what I can best describe as their premiere show even though it only serves at present the USA while the rest of us get those shows on other services like Netflix. Now as many of us know, there have been many adaptations made based on the Teen Titans with the most well known being those two animated shows seen on Cartoon Network and the like. But this time, its live action, it attempts to start a new DC universe and its super serious with the occasional humour when necessary. The transition from animation to live action hasn't always played out well, but the good people at DC seem determined to do good with this one. So let's take a look:
Detective Dick Grayson (played by the son of Will Turner, Brenton Thwaites) one day on the job, comes across a girl with a connection to a demonic being called Rachel (played by Teagan Croft) who together unravel a plot that could threaten the entire planet. Desperate for help, they team up with an amnesic but powerful alien called Kori (played by Anna Diop) and a boy who can turn into a tiger called Gar (played by Ryan Potter) and together they form the team known as the Titans while coming across some other heroes and vigilantes along the way.
So as I said, there have been several different adaptations of the team which have largely been in animated form. There's the 2003 animated series which made history in giving the team a more teenage look over their comic book counterparts and on top of the problems that teens have, there was an even balance between serious moments and humour. Then there's the 2013 series which embraced all things silly and became your typical Cartoon Network show with slapstick humour and just making fun of itself. There was also those two animated films set in the DC Animated Movie Universe which was more closer to the source material as far as the looks of the characters were concerned, but has been seen as probably the most serious it has gone with some heart for good measure. So now we have the first live action outing which out of all those adaptations, might just be the best one yet. It is super serious, but has some light humour and also does a bit of universe building without making it too obvious for the viewer. There may be some parts that don't make sense, but for the first show in this new universe, its pretty good and shows that DC are as strong as ever on the small screen with some hope for the big screen also. However, I am having to mark it down by a point because unlike some people, I took my time watching it and by the time I got around to watching it all, most of it was spoiled for me which as someone who was looking forward to this show, it didn't help me one bit. A lesson that we can learn is that its OK to stop the person giving the spoilers by simply blocking it out (or hanging up the phone which I threatened to do in my case) and that the person giving away the spoilers just needs to respect the wishes of the viewer and keep the spoilers to themselves. Similarly, just avoid the Internet for a while if the spoilers are everywhere. But its still a positive rating despite that. 8/10
