Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise have done quite a variety of roles, but you often see the former play some kind of murderous psychopath and the latter play an action hero of sorts. So in a way, it was nice to see them play something different in a film like this one where the story isn't great, but its the peformances in it that really makes it shine and be memorable. Whether you can handle the truth or not, its time to review this film:
The film (which itself is largely fictional as its loosely based on a play of the same name) focuses on two US marines Harold Dawson and Louden Downey (played by Wolfgang Bodison and James Marshall respectively) who have been accused for the murder of a fellow marine William T. Santiago (played by Michael DeLorenzo) at the Guatanimo Bay Naval Base. Santiago had been wanting to get transferred out of the facility due to poor relations with his fellow marines and had been compared unfavourably to them. This is led to some debate, but he would ultimately had been trained to be a better marine by his commanding officer Jonathan James Kendrick (played by 24's Keifer Sutherland). As this all plays out, the case would soon attract the attention of naval investigator and lawyer JoAnne Galloway (played by Demi Moore) who believes that there may have been a "code red" carried out in the incident. But the case is ultimately given to the inexperienced Daniel Kaffee (played by Cruise) who eventually works with Galloway to solve the case with some surprising results.
We all remember this film for the famous and well known line about one handling the truth. As a film, its OK. It's story is predictable and its normally not the sort of film I would enjoy nor like. But it has some great performances from some very big and at the time soon to be big actors. It also like I said has some very well known lines that have since become memes and part of pop culture. Overall its an OK film. Not a great one by any means, but its the acting that counts more than anything else here. 8/10
