Everyone is saying it and so will I. Jaws is the best shark film out there and I'm a firm believer that there can be no shark film that can top it. For many years we've had a lot of shark films and while many of them haven't been able to get even close to what Jaws is, there is some that have had a cult following like the Sharknado films and some that still give us a good time despite the bar that has already been raised. Today we're looking at a film based on the book series by Steve Alten all about the long extinct megalodon shark so be ready for some scares and a good time. So let us literally dive in:
Somewhere in the ocean (never explained where which is disappointing), a nuclear submarine takes damage which prompts a group of rescue divers led by Jonas Taylor (played by action star Jason Statham) to go and rescue them. Having managed to get a few to safety, Jonas realises that some of his fellow divers are trapped and knowing that everyone will die if he goes back in, he abandons them as his group escape. Jonas believes that the submarine may have been destroyed by some kind of giant creature, but is quickly dismissed of such claims by Dr. Heller (played by Robert Taylor) as characters like him tend to do. Five years then pass and Jonas is reluctantly called in to save another group of divers (one of which is his ex) and soon enough, it becomes true that there is indeed a giant creature in the depths and its up to him and anyone else brave enough to take this creature on before any more damage is caused.
For what the film is, its not going to win any awards and chances are that people may forget about it soon after seeing it. But for what it is, its an OK flick that's worthy of the B grade that critics have given it. I was expecting the shark to be much bigger than what is in the film (which isn't a spoiler per say and just an observation) and it does in a way follow the usual horror trope of killing off the stereotypes first and the a**holes some time later (though the billionaire isn't actually too bad of a character this time around). Overall though, its got some fun moments and some "rolling eyes" moments, but its a good flick that is no Jaws but still a good shark film nonetheless despite how predictable it is. 7/10
