And don't worry. I know who Anita Serkessian is and I hate her just as much as you do I'm sure.
25 - JonTron
While not as active as he used to be, JonTron has this voice and body language that makes him sound like your typical New York guy or some kind of city based mafia guy. Most of the stuff he does is game reviews and the occasional sketch or two. The most notable things he does on his channel is to do with bootleg stuff which is often seen as playing a game that doesn't feel quite right. Of course he's often accompanied by his pet Green-cheeked parakeet Jacques who in his shows is some kind of robot. But as well as that bootleg stuff, he generally reviews games of a particular theme in just one singular episode and many other things too. He's very good, very funny and just a great YouTuber despite the trouble he's had from the Internet in general in his past.
24 - BrutalMoose
For a while, I felt it was quite rare to find anyone on the Internet playing those old PC games many of us grew up with in the 80s and 90s and then I found BrutalMoose. A guy who plays and reviews quite a few old PC games and there's even a few that I have never heard of until he did a video on them. On top of that he also does reviews on old TV programs and educational videos, a show where he reviews a game in under two minutes, a lot of top 5 lists and more recently does a lot of food videos. So yeah there's quite a variety of things that he does and he does it all with a smile despite sometimes tackling some pretty bizarre stuff.
23 - Yogscast
So now we come to the first of a few in this list that are actually groups of people doing gaming and anything related to gaming such as gaming streams, charity drives for any gaming based charity out there and more. Yogscast was originally comprised of just two members, but has since quickly become one of the most successful gaming groups that are based in the UK. One thing I really enjoy that they do is their annual Jingle Jam in which there is a stream and gamers can grab their advent calendar based Humble Bundle and get a new game every day with all the money spent going to charity. Its just a great way to make both gamers and those in need happy at the same time. But as a group overall, they are great at what they do and I hope they continue to do great things in the coming years.
22 - Funhaus/Inside Gaming
Many of you will know these guys as the original cast of Machinima's Inside Gaming before they left to join Rooster Teeth as Funhaus and then Rooster Teeth managed to get the rights of Inside Gaming from Machinima following them ceasing all or most operations. Which is probably good given how they have treated their content owners over the years. But anyway so this group of gamers are known mainly for their humorous news round ups and gameplay videos in which one person plays the game and two from behind offer humorous commentary. Its a good group of people that seemingly love to entertain and be silly which I guess in a way is good for those of us who feel down and need cheering up which itself speaks true for many of these people. But overall, Funhaus/Inside Gaming or whatever you want to call them are just a blast to enjoy watching and just seem like a good group of people that you can pretty much go and have a beer with if the occasion calls for it. They are great.
21 - Level UP
Perhaps not as well known as some of the other people here, but that's OK. So Level UP doesn't really do many gameplay videos and instead uses a variety of retro gaming sprites to make up some pretty good animation for something that many of us who ever visited Newgrounds many years ago thought was extinct. And the best thing about his animations is that they are suitable for pretty much anyone and everyone just by how harmless they are with the occasional darker and maturer animation from time to time. The most notable things this guy has done must be his Super Mario and Minecraft mashup saga called Mariocraft, his Easter egg spotting animations and just putting characters in scenarios different from their own. Lots of originality and lots of fun for everyone. Not much else to say than that, though I am still waiting for Mariocraft 4 and the next episode of the Goomba Revolution.
20 - PewDiePie
There isn't really much I can say about PewDiePie that has already been said. He is a gamer at heart and the most well known and famous one at that in this list. This of course is because of him being one of the most subscribed YouTubers of all time and as such is the first to reach several milestones for YouTube before anyone else. But despite that, he is controversial as well, but seemingly not as controversal as some other people and things that I know. As for his videos, well they are largely Let's Plays and him ranting about all sorts of stuff. He's an awesome dude and probably a nice guy in real life despite the controversial things he says and the weird stuff that he does.
19 - Achievement Hunter
As you can probably guess, these guys came about at a time where there was no dedicated gaming site or community that were all about those important achievements that have been seen since the 7th generation of gaming (though some achievements exist for retro games if you look in the right places). Since then, they have done a number of shows and videos largely dedicated to their namesake as well as some other things too like charity drives, Let's Play videos and so many others. I think if you were to find all those important achievements and didn't know where to find out how to gain them, these would be the guys that can tell you definitively how to do it. Finding achievements which would normally be a daunting task for any gamer, is made fun by these guys as well as their other stuff too of course.
18 - VanossGaming
Now for some of us, watching a video of a gaming session with a group of gamers may not be that fun or interesting to watch given that there are a few that mainly play games and don't really do much in the way of comedy and entertainment. But with VanossGaming, its not that at all. Instead we get the main guy playing with other gaming commentators and just having a good time to entertain us and inspiring us to do similar videos online. The videos he does are pretty good and possibly one of the highest rated series of videos of this kind on YouTube. Great fun to be had here.
17 - 8-BitRyan
Now 8-BitRyan is one half of the gaming duo known as 8-BitGaming but the reason why he's here solo is because he's actually a lot of fun to watch. His Let's Plays are pretty good and are not just him in a corner playing the game, but some editing goes a long way in letting him express his views. He is in my opinion considered to be a member of a group of UK based gamers that are dedicated to playing nothing but FNAF and fan games which is OK if you are into that sort of thing. But to me, I prefer seeing gamers play other games too and fortunately 8-BitRyan is one of those people. Great stuff he does.
16 - Gaming Wildlife
Perhaps one of the more lesser known groups of gamers on this list, Gaming Wildlife do quite a few things on YouTube. There's their main show which is their namesake in which we get this survival expert giving us an in depth look at the different kinds (or in his case species) of gamers out there. As well as sketches as well, the team are also known for their "100% Honest" series in which one of them plays one of the main people behind a company and has them be 100% honest about their company and how they are doing which of course the real company would never do. There are not perfect in any way, but the stuff they do is pretty good and I feel bad that they were associated with Channel Awesome which would have been a great place to work for had they been managed better than they actually were.
15 - Smosh Games
You know out of all the groups of gamers here, Smosh Games is possibly the only one that largely has people who compared to the other groups here are considered to be younger looking despite most of them being in their late 20s and early 30s. So while the now defunct Defy Media was still in business and getting their various channels rolling, Smosh was one of those channels and following a huge surge in popularity they went out to make several channels dedicated to a particular thing. Smosh Games became their main gaming channel for both board games and video games with some occasional physical games and party games. Basically nothing but games was this channel. I have seen quite a few of their videos and they are all pretty darn funny. Its just a group of young looking people having a good time playing all sorts of YouTube friendly games and its just great. Just wish they would keep going despite problems with their parent company which has put a downer in their content.
14 - Lamarr Wilson
Lamarr Wilson may not be known for playing games all that often, but what most people know him for is his many unboxing vidoes and trying all sorts of different flavours of Oreos among other things. He does of course unbox plenty of gaming related things and does a few shopping hauls as well. All while scaring us with his unboxing knife and entertaining us with his good humour and light hearted self. He's great fun to watch and always has something to unbox, try or talk about every week which is generally how most YouTubers go about their business and such.
13 - Sword and Shell (Andre "Black Nerd" and Katie Wilson)
There's two things to point here. This can be seen as cheating in a way, but at the same time I may not be cheating at all because Sword and Shell was indeed a gaming channel once upon a time and both Andre and Katie talk about and play games on their own respective channels. On top of that, Andre uses his brand of comedy to review films and talk about pop culture generally while also doing some similar things like Lamarr Wilson (who funnily enough is friends with). Meanwhile Katie pretty much does the same albeit less frequently than Andre. But whatever preference you have of the two, they are both very entertaining and fun to watch and I hope they do more things soon whether it be together or solo. Still good either way.
12 - Larry Bundy Jr.
Being the only gamer left in Channel Awesome has its ups and downs. But for Larry here, its more because no one ever thought he was affiliated with them. Well at least now people know. But anyway so Larry is one of the few British gamers on this list and also one that doesn't hide his accent at all. Its pretty obvious at that. Most of his content is just showing the rest of the world all the little games that we Brits have that perhaps are not shown off on a global scale but still worth talking about. In addition he also does pretty much what other gamers like him do on their channels that includes reviews, top 10s and a few videos of gameplay. He is as British as anyone is going to get and one that never hides it. His humorous videos are great and the way he manages to give games only released in the UK some much needed exposure is also good too.
11 - ScrewAttack
In the early days of Internet stars, ScrewAttack acted as a starting platform of many of the people here on this list. Those people in question would post their videos on their website before starting out their YouTube career due to the platform's popularity. They do of course their own stuff as well such as gameplay videos (mainly via their GameAttack channel), top 10s and most famously their Death Battles in which characters from pop culture go head to head in an in depth brutal fight that sees what character is definitively the best one of the two. Without ScrewAttack, many of the people here in this list wouldn't be around or be as popular as they are so we have a lot to thank for them as well as their own content too of course.
10 - DanTDM
There are not many gamers out there on the Internet (well at least from where I've gone to) who have an audience largely comprised of children. So when this happens, surely the gamer would take advantage of this right? Well that's where DanTDM (short for The Diamond Minecart) went with his show and for good reason too. Everyone in the UK knows him for being the most subscribed YouTuber in the country as well as being a gamer dedicated to playing mainly Minecraft but also other games tailored (assumed or otherwise) to a young audience. He also frequently dyes his hair and has a lot going for him. I'd say for the stuff he does, its a very good channel that does a lot and everyone seemingly loves him for it. I sure get a kick out of watching him and its great.
9 - Caddicarus
Another UK based gamer who is best known for his many, many, many reviews on games released on PS1 and its successors with the occasional PC game as well. Caddicarus mainly does reviews on those games often ending it with the game either being slaughtered for being in his opinion incredibly bad, salvaged if the game (again his opinion) is too good to be slaughtered, or a combination of the two if he feels indifferent about the game. Also unlike most gamers like him, he has a lot of one man sketches (with the occasional second person or animal) and a tenancy to use loud noises with contrast at an all time high, on random occasions but always with some kind of warning. He's a great entertainer and I do very much enjoy his content and I look forward to seeing what he does next.
8 - Game Grumps
Mainly a let's play channel and also the current home for another big Internet star known as Egoraptor. As it implies, its basically a let's play channel with these two dudes playing it either one or the other or together with humorous commentary. But what makes them stand out is that they haven't got some kind of camera filming them as they do their let's play videos. In addition they also do a series where both dudes go against one another in a game. Another series where they play games mainly on the PC via Steam and others too. In addition, both of them are members of the music group Starbomb in which Danny (left) sings and Egoraptor or Arin (right) raps in what can best be described as a p*** take on gaming through song. Arin also frequently appears in music videos by Ninja Sex Party of which Danny is also a member of. So yeah they do a lot of comedy based gaming videos even though their namesake should imply that they are grumpy (and they probably are anyway as they play the games). They are a lot of fun to watch and out of most gamers here, they actually don't take the games too seriously which I guess is good in a way.
7 - AngryJoe
Another person formally associated with Channel Awesome and one who I swear could one day run for president if he wanted. I mean AngryJoe is one of the more passionate gamers out there who cares very deeply about gaming and always speaks his mind when the business of gaming goes sour. Most of the things he does are reviews of games and films which both use a series of formats such as one where he sits down with his friends to talk about one of them or does one where its just him and has a few bits of footage, behind the scenes videos and sketches. Then there are those rants he does where he expresses his feelings about different things and so on. If there was anybody capable of battling the system that continues to torment gamers everywhere, this is the guy. There probably are gamers out there as passionate as he is, but to me he's great and will not be intimidated by those who try and ruin gaming forever.
6 - Jacksepticeye
All of you may know Jacksepticeye if you spend a lot of time online. But for those of you who don't this gamer is Irish and spends most of his time gaming normally with a positive attitude towards things even when times are tough. I enjoy a lot of Jacksepticeye's videos just because of how bonkers they generally go. His videos are very fun to watch even those which put him to the limit and those that cause him to change to his darker self or just to do something silly. Either way, you are going to have a good time watching his stuff and to many people, that's really all that matters.
5 - Markipler
Like Jacksepticeye, Markipler is another well known gamer on YouTube. Perhaps best known for having a distinctive voice that in a way makes all the girls want to have him so to speak. He largely does the same as Jacksepticeye in terms of content on YouTube. But as well as that he also does a number of sketches often with fellow YouTubers and his own friends and like some of the people on this list, has also been on tour doing sketches, gaming and all sorts of great stuff. Plus he is also the self proclaimed king of FNAF which means that he is in fact a serious but fun loving gamer and he also has a few other characters as well including a darker version of himself. Great fun seeing his videos I tell ya.
4 - The Game Theorists
Until they came around, it would be very rare for anyone to find a group of people dedicated to doing nothing but theories. And yet MatPat decided to start his Internet fame by being quite simply the theorist gamer. A type of gamer who plays games, but also looks in depth at the theories behind elements of said game which of course led to how The Game Theorists came about. Of course MatPat is the face of this channel and does a number of theory videos to do with games for it, but he isn't on his own hence why there is an s at the end. You got him doing theory and debate videos. You got another person doing a show on how games can be in relation to a wide range of different multinational cultures. A show about game design, a show on how two very different games could be set in the same universe as each other. Another show about a franchise's history and one dedicated to everything Super Smash Bros. amongst a number of other different shows. It like some of the other things on this list, was also associated with ScrewAttack and has its own spin-off channel that is to do with film and TV show theories with related content to go with it. And there is even a channel dedicated to livestreams. So I think its best to say that MatPat and his team are the go to guys if you ever want to know about theories and maybe perhaps learn a thing or two. I mean someone has to figure out the FNAF franchise, right?
3 - The Completionist
So most gamers whenever they play game, some will want to see the whole game through while others just want to go through nothing but the story and those who lack for a better phrase, just can't be bothered with all the hard work. Jirard Khalil meanwhile likes to go all the way and play through any and every game he comes across until they are 100% complete which of course means going through the story if there is one, collecting all the collectibles if there are any and even trying to get every single ending possible if such a thing is possible. He is what he would describe as The Completionist, a type of gamer who just wants to complete a game and go all the way with it which is what his show is all about. Of course he has some other shows as well such as Super Beard Bros. in which he plays games with his beard buddy Alex and is also one member of the music group Big Bad Bosses who do a variety of different genres of music all to do with gaming and his character just so happens to be a version of Bowser from Super Mario. Overall if you really want to know if a game can be beaten and whether it can be beated easily or not, Jirard will answer that question for you in his in depth videos. And for many of us, having a beard makes you a gamer of some capacity.
2 - Dorkly
So much like with Level UP, Dorkly also do a number of sketches with sprites that are meant to resemble video game characters. But unlike Level UP, there is original voice acting and the audience is generally the sort of audience that CollegeHumor would get as this spun off from them. But as well as these hilarious sketches, we also get a series called Today in Nerd History which is basically videos that show you those times where something happened in say a video game and/or film that are considered a nerdy thing. But for the stuff they do, its all pretty good and quite funny too. Arguably the best sprite animation has to offer I find.
Honourable Mentions:
- Peanut Butter Gamer - Great gaming YouTuber with a lot of comedic videos and is one of the few who uses the word "review" for a lack of a better word. Only seen a few of his videos, but still a good Internet Gamer.
- ProJared - Another good gaming YouTuber known for his One Minute Reviews of games as well as the occasional Top Tens like many on this list. Not watched enough of his stuff, but from what I have seen, its pretty good.
- Dawko - A good gamer, though is more into playing the FNAF games than anything else which is ok I guess, but I'm all for variety over just one thing.
- The Pals - Group of gamers known for their humorous playthroughs of Roblox and Minecraft both alone on their own channels and together too.
- The Warp Zone - Group of gamers known for doing sketches and music based around pop culture generally, but gaming first and foremost.
- GameXplain - Self explanatory but basically a group of gamers discussing about all things gaming in a podcast like format with a particular interest in Nintendo and Kingdom Hearts.
- Call Me Kevin - Another Irish gamer known for playing a number of weird and bizarre games but always honest with his video titles and his play style.
- CaptainSparklez - American gamer known for his many Trail Fusion playthroughs and some other gaming things too.
Its kind of hard to see the Internet as it is now with gaming whereas once upon a time, it wasn't always like this. And you know when it comes to both gaming and being famous on the Internet, we are often reminded of that one gamer who without being online the world would've been very different. I am of course referring to The Angry Video Game Nerd who plays quite a few bad retro games and does pretty much anything and everything you are bound to expect from someone who is as angry as he is. He is the one who started it all (at least from where I see it) and he is the best gamer there is. But I mean all these gamers are great obviously, but he is the one that most people on this list would be inspired to be like in the future. So yeah that's really why the Angry Video Game Nerd is number one as he is the original Internet Gamer in my opinion and the most entertaining one at that even though nowadays, he isn't the only angry gamer out there or the only angry critic overall.
So that is my list. Feel free to comment below of your favourites and let's hope we can all continue to enjoy watching these guys play games or in some cases, play games with them in the future. Game on!
