There was no doubt in my mind that I would eventually get around to watching yet another DC film that is risky. And you know I'm glad that they are now more keen with taking risks than ever before. Gone are the days where its either Batman or Superman taking centre stage. Now the lesser known characters who have never gone beyond the comics, video games, TV shows and direct to home media films finally take centre stage on the big screen. So to many, Aquaman seems to feel like the sort of hero who isn't as impressive as other heroes out there. At least that's what many of us would've thought when his debut came about in the 40s and its only recently that fans and writers are taking him more seriously and making him more than just a man who talks to fish. Oh yes this is one film that's bound to be as badass as DC fans would like it. So let us literally dive into this film and see if its as great as people say it is:
In the year 1985, a Maine based lighthouse keeper called Thomas Curry (played by the face and voice of the clone troopers in Star Wars, Temuera Morrison) rescues a lady that calls herself Atlanna (played by former Batman girl, Nicole Kidman) who reveals herself as the queen of the underwater and technologically advanced city of Atlantis. Together they have a son called Arthur (played by an actor who makes any of his roles pretty badass, Jason Momoa) who is led to believe that his mother was executed upon having him as the first so called half breed son and as a result rejects the idea of being the new king of Atlantis. Years go by and following the defeat of Stepphenwolf with help from the Justice League, Arthur soon goes on a journey to discover his true heritage and despite reservations, go about retaking the throne that is rightfully his.
Before seeing this, I always thought that Wonder Woman and Black Panther were similar in terms of their respective kingdoms being hidden from the world and them being born from royalty and such. But I can now say that Aquaman seems like the more natural choice to compare with Black Panther largely due in part to the fact that both Wakanda and Atlantis have technologically more advanced stuff than the rest of their respective worlds. But anyway, I thought the film was great. Its a big visual spectacle and worthy of being watched in 3D and with popcorn. All the actors play their parts well and its difficult to find anything bad about it. Well I will say that one of the villains felt quite wasted despite some build up, but fortunately his story was resolved in a credits scene so its not all bad. The plot in a way does feel like something that has been done before but not at the scale we get here. But with an all star cast, great visuals and a risk that's paid off yet again, its a great way to re introduce Aquaman as more than just a guy who talks to fish and makes us look forward to his next adventures as well as what DC have to offer next. 9/10
