Random Movie Review - Pacific Rim: Uprisng

So the first film I felt was a huge hit. Admittedly I may have given it a perfect score while being oblivious to some of the minor problems it has. But I still believe that its what a summer blockbuster should be like. So years later with a new director and a new distributor, we got the long awaited sequel which is expected to start a series of sequels to the original film as well as a potential crossover with the Monsterverse. Lots to look forward to I'm sure, but for now let's look at the sequel that has left critics and audiences polarised on what they think of it:

Ten years have passed since the Battle of the Breach and with the world having very little Kaiju presence, the Jaeger continue to protect the Earth as well as upholding the law as it were. We meet former Jaeger pilot and son to one of the heroes in the battle Jake Pentecost (played by John Boyega of Star Wars fame) who rather than follow his father's footsteps has made a living of selling old Jaeger parts to the black market. But he somehow runs into Amara Namani (played by Cailee Spaeny) a Jaeger enthusiast after a deal goes sour and both get captured before being recruited by the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps where he becomes an instructor to the new recruits of which she is one of. They along with the other recruits and pilots form a close bond before facing a new threat that could see the return of the Kaju and the betrayal of one of their own people.

While I understand why critics and audiences are split on what they think of it, all I can say is that its not too bad of a sequel. Its more or less the same as before with the sequel trying to do it all better than the first and making a good attempt at doing so but just needing more of a push. But otherwise, the acting is pretty decent, the story is a bit predictable but otherwise OK. Without spoiling it, I only have one issue about the film which is killing off one of the fan favourite characters in not the greatest way possible. Ultimately, its an OK film. Its not as good as the first nor is it trying to be. But its a fun popcorn film and once again shows how a good summer blockbuster should work. Looking forward to whatever comes next. 7/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2
