Its kind of hard to imagine a world where Queen doesn't exist. They are one of the greatest bands of all time and pretty much everyone knows at least one of their songs if not all of them. So I was pretty happy that to pay tribute to the legacy left by their frontman the late Freddy Mercury (played in this film by Rami Malek) a film was made to tell the origins of the band and how they became as great as they still are today many years later. I'm glad also that the film had not a huge but some kind of involvement from Brian May and Roger Taylor who are of course from the band itself and have lived to tell of Freddy's time in the band. So let's see if this film will rock you, give you the feeling of being a champion or just making you want to break free from it all together:
So its important to note that most of the events depicted in the film are told out of order which the film makers have described as adding more dramatic effects to the film. But its basically a biographical film that shows how Queen came to be as a band as well as the controversial origins of the titular song "Bohemian Rhapsody" (mainly due to its six minute length) and another hit of theirs "I Want to Break Free" (mainly because the band is in drag in the music video). All leading up to their famous Live Aid gig all those years ago.
So after watching the film, I found a lot of things I didn't know about Freddy. To start with, I didn't know that he and his family were not completely British. I was also puzzled about his sexuality because he was flamboyant but it was only when I saw the film that I found out he was of the LGBT community. Anyway even though some critics have given it a critical review, I as a Queen fan felt it was an OK film. You get all or most of their big hits in it though due to how its all played out, not everything is told in the correct order and not everything is accurate to what actually happened (mainly because of the need for some dramatisation to be put in). But overall its one for the fans and a good watch nonetheless. 8/10
