Its good that the DC Animated Universe is still going in some capacity whether it be through comic books or a film like this. So interestingly this was originally going to be using the same models of the heroes seen in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths but ultimately that option was axed in favour of those from the DC Animated Universe to avoid confusion with the New 52 films. So those of you who don't know, the Fatal Five did in fact appear in the Justice League Unlimited episode "Far From Home" (not to be confused with that upcoming film about a spider person going to Europe) many years ago and the episode itself had Supergirl leave the team and involved some time travel. Now the Fatal Five are back so let's see how much of a threat they pose this time:
In the 31st Century, Fatal Five members Tharok (voiced by Peter Jessop), Persuador (voiced by Matthew Yang King) and Mano (voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodriguez) attack the headquarters of the Legion of Superheroes with the intent to use a Time Sphere to travel to the 21st Century where they would save their comrades and enact a plan that could threaten humanity as we know it. The three members succeed in travelling to the 21st Century although somehow manage to get Star Boy (voiced by Elyes Gabel) tagging along as a stowaway. As Star Boy fails to warn people due to some brain problems (and a moment where it looks like he is streaking), he soon gets aprehended by Batman (reprised by the great Kevin Conroy) and is sent to Arkham while the Time Sphere ends up in Metropolis before being taken to the Justice League headquarters by Superman (reprised by the great George Newbern) for analysis. Ten months soon pass in which Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman (reprised by the great Susan Eisenberg) are taking on young members to see if they have what it takes to be members of the league before learning of The Fatal Five's plans and must work together with their students to stop the Fatal Five's plans from coming true.
This film is pretty good. It brings us a more mature take on the Justice League cartoon which includes tackling mental health, moments of intense violence and a few cheeky sexual innuendos too. Some moments don't make sense and some elements of the story can be a bit mediocre. But its overall a good watch and I hope this isn't the last we see of the animated universe. 8/10
