Its been a while since the first one came out and between then and now, we have had a LEGO film about Batman and a LEGO Ninjago film as well. But its only when 2019 came about that we got the first actual sequel to The Lego Movie in which we learnt that everything can be awesome. Well some things anyway. So here we are with the sequel that aims to be more awesome than before and includes some female type elements to it this time. So let's build away and see if everything can still be awesome or not:
So in the real world, Finn (reprised by Jadon Sand while Graham Miller plays flashback Finn) starts to share his LEGO with his sister Bianca (played by Brooklynn Prince) which is reflected in the Lego universe with Duplo aliens arriving. While most of the inhabitants see them as a threat, Emmett (reprised by a man of many action based talents, Chris Pratt) tries to make peace by making a heart out of LEGO bricks. But when the aliens eat the heart and playfully asks for more, everyone soon sees this as a threat and retaliates. We then move to five years later in which minifigures resembling the Justice League go to the so called Systar System to save everyone but they never return while Batman (reprised by Will Arnett) goes on his solo adventure and most of what was Finn's LEGO is taken by Bianca. What was Bricksburg has become known as Apocalypseburg and all of its remaining citizens have had to harden up. Except for Emmett who still believes that everything can still be awesome. But in one of the aliens' invasions, the heroes meet General Mayhem (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) who using hardened communication takes away Batman, Wyldstyle (reprised by Elizabeth Banks), Benny (reprised by Charlie Day), Metalbeard (reprised by Nick Offerman) and Uni-Kitty (reprised by Alison Brie) and brings them to the Systar System. With only Emmett wanting to save them, he creates a spaceship and travels to the Systar System to save his friends. But little does he know that they may not need saving after all and that someone has some vengeful plans for him and his future.
So just to clarify, yeah this isn't as awesome as the first one. But that's OK as its tooled up to be a musical that isn't one of those forced or in your face ones. The musical numbers are all great and it includes some rapping from Batman, a villain song unlike any other and an opposite and depressing version of "Everything is Awesome". It also manages to unify LEGO elements such as Duplo and elements that you would normally find in the themes tailored to girls. While all of that sounds good, there are some things that for me at least didn't work. The meta jokes are OK but do tend to get tiring and overused after a while. Lots of characters are featured in the film, but don't get a lot of screen time which I know also happened in the first one, but this time its more than normal. There are also some story elements that actually for a LEGO film made me a bit annoyed. Ultimately, its still a pretty decent film even though its not as awesome as the first one, but still tries to make us learn the importance of sharing and friendship not to mention that its OK if things don't go the way you planned. 7/10
