You know ever since the first Guardians of the Galaxy film came out, we have now come to love films that have a great soundtrack, stylish action, good humour and a nostalgic and retro feel to them. Although done before, its what makes films like that work really well and worthy of being watched over and over again. As well as that, there is also those films based on graphic novels which ever since the 2010s started, have also been beloved and well received. So David Leitch decides one day to combine all of that and this is the end result. A spy film with a great soundtrack, stylish action scenes, a nostalgic and retro feel, good humour when the call for it is needed and its based on a graphic novel. Plus with big names like Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class-Dark Phoenix), you know you are in for a good time. So let's get to it:
Set around the collapse of the Berlin Wall, an MI6 agent known as James Gascoigne (played by Sam Hargrave) is shot down by KGB agent Yuri Bakhtin (played by Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) who then steals a microfilm document concealed in Gascoigne's wristwatch known as the List which has the names of every agent on both sides that are active in Berlin. Ten days later and a top level MI6 agent known as Lorraine Broughton (played by Theron) is bought in to be debriefed by MI6 executive Eric Gray (played by that auctioneer in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Toby Jones) and CIA agent Emmett Kurzfeld (played by James P. Sullivan himself, John Goodman) about her recently completed mission in Berlin; something of which is the main plot of the film which alternates between those events and the debriefing room. We learn of her shenanigans with KGB agents and her partnership with the eccentric MI6 agent David Percival (played by McAvoy) all for the sake of finding The List.
The story may not be what its cracked up to be, but most of us would only be watching this film more for what has now been mentioned twice so far in this review. Its a film where the story isn't really the main thing for people watching it. Its more the action scenes, the soundtrack and the nostalgia and retro feel that we get from watching it that matters. Its great fun and a good alternative to traditional and more serious spy films as well as those cheesy spy comedies too. 8/10
