So a little while ago, I played and reviewed a compilation of remasters of the very first three Crash Bandicoot games which was of course originally a PlayStation franchise until a lot of disputes over copyright occurred and it ultimately went to Activision where it has remained to this day. The same thing sort of occurred with Spyro which was also once a PlayStation franchise before ultimately being part of Activision also and like with the former, Activision wanted to try and revive it after turning it into Skylanders. So here we are with another set of remakes by the same people who made the Crash remakes and you know it kind of makes sense considering that the pair once had a crossover and they do seem to compliment each other quite well. Now as someone who hasn't played much of the original games, this review will not be a comparison of both versions of the three games. It will be reviewed as it is so let's get to it:
So the games that are remade here are Spyro The Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Revenge and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Set in the fictional Dragon Kingdom, Spyro (voiced by Tom Kenny, the voice actor from the second game onwards) goes on a series of adventures with the dragonfly Sparx. In the first game, an evil creature that is a hybrid of an orc and a gnome turns all the dragons (except for Spyro of course) of the Dragon Kingdom into crystallised statues which prompts Spyro to find and defeat this being while freeing the other dragons along the way. In the second game, Spyro and Sparx get fed up of continuous rain and go on a holiday to get the sun back, only to then be transported to a fantasy world where a dragon hating warlord resides and so Spyro sets out to stop the warlord. And finally in the third game, Spyro and the gang celebrate the titular "Year of the Dragon" until a villain invades and steals all the dragon eggs and so Spyro must team up with others to find the eggs and defeat this villain. Gameplay mostly remains the same across all three games in which they are treated as traditional 3D platformers with the third game being played from a third person perspective. In the first game, players are tasked with finding dragons trapped in crystallised statues as well as treasure while battling a number of bosses and enemies as you travel to different worlds and settings. In the second game, players pretty much almost do the exact same thing, but find talismans, use treasure for progression purposes and learn new abilities including swimming. And finally in the third game, players are to find eggs across a number of worlds though players are not required to gather all the eggs to complete the game (well unless you are a completionist of course). Across all the games in the compilation, Spyro moves and has abilities much like a tradional dragon with each of the games having hub worlds filled with portals to levels. While the third game also has a few other playable characters alongside Spyro and is the only game played from a third person perspective. Graphics look almost identical to that of the Crash remakes, but retains a cartoony and nostalgic feel.
Overall, these are great games. I have heard the originals were great also. I guess these games manage to make the experience fresh and new again and I'm glad that they are not piled over with DLC and other micro-transaction nonsense. Great fun all around and I look forward to seeing more games like this in the future because they are really great games and I couldn't fault them if I could. Well I mean there are a couple of bugs, but its not as bad as some games we get nowadays. 9/10
