AC1: Random Movie Review - The BFG (1989)

So previously I reviewed the Steven Spielberg adaptation of Roald Dahl's The BFG and I thought it was an OK take. But people have been saying I should check out the film adaptation that came before it and boy is it very different. Its not a Hollywood made film like the other one and it was a made for TV film as well. So yeah chances are there will be some comparisons to the other film because I actually watched this one long after seeing the Spielberg one and therefore couldn't do an Old and New review. So let's get to it:

Its pretty much the same story about a girl in an orphanage called Sophie (voiced by Amanda Root) who comes across this giant (voiced by Del Boy himself David Jason) who kidnaps her and takes her to Giant Country and the pair start to bond over the idea of blowing dreams into the minds of children while the other giants are far bigger and more vicious. This of course would lead the pair to find a way to stop them and get help from a very unlikely source.

Treated as a musical, this film is OK. I do prefer the Spielberg one over this one only because the animation here is very dated and some of the songs can be a bit cheesy. But one thing I do like is how the ending here isn't rushed like the other one and it does have its perks and charm. So yeah not an entirely perfect adaptation of the beloved book, but a pretty good one at that. 8/10
