As you can probably tell from the poster, we are looking at a pretty old film, but a classic nonetheless. So previously I have talked about the live action remake where the story is told from the villain's perspective (though they change the story to make her out to be more anti-hero than villain) and I feel bad to not have reviewed the original film at the same time. So today, we are looking at the original (and arguably the best version) film and see how it stacks up to today's standard. Its the 16th animated classic as well as the third to have a Disney Princess within and the first animated film to be shown in widescreen. So let's take a look before we all fall asleep:
King Stefan (voiced by Taylor Holmes) and Queen Leah (voiced by Verna Felton) go through a period of having no child for many years. That is until one year where they produce Princess Aurora (voiced by Mary Costa) and the kingdom is invited to meet the little lass. But when the mistress of all evil Maleficent (voiced by Eleanor Audley) visits just after the three good fairies give her a gift, she casts a curse onto her that will cause her to die when she pricks her finger on a steering wheel on her sixteenth birthday, but will nevertheless grow into a beautiful woman. The three good fairies manage to weaken the curse which will allow her to instead fall into a deep slumber. With all the spinning wheels in the kingdom set to be destroyed and Aurora under the protection of the fairies in an unknown location, only time will tell if the curse succeeds and if it can be broken.
With the Disney company being what they are, it comes as no surprise that the film has aged well and still looks great today even compared to today's standard of animation. Its a good film with great and memorable characters and a lot of laughs in an otherwise very dark film. One that will give us the quintessential all time best Disney villain you can get anywhere. 9/10
