Random Video Game Review - Stellaris

Paradox Interactive have made quite a name for themselves in recent years. Having a keen interest in strategy games with most of their games being released largely for PCs and MACs with the occasional console release as well. So here we are with Stellaris which is their take on sci-fi strategy and I do love a good sci-fi game. So let's get to it:

Set in a possible 2200 many years from now, players control some kind of early developmental species during the early stages of interstellar space exploration but right after the invention of faster than light spaceship technology (or warp speed and hyperspace for you Trekkers and Jedis out there). The goal is for the species to claim a place as one of the species of the stars and players do this by applying factors that include the ethics of civilisation, what items the species can make and/or gather as well as whether the player wants to co-exist with other species or do what most Doctor Who monsters and aliens want to do and wipe all other species so that they become the dominant one. Players take control of spaceships that include science, construction and military vessels. Combat can be in the stars or grounded with a focus on the bigger picture, preperation and strategy. And of course my prefered way of doing things; diplomacy. Players get the choice of either joining an already established line of species or make their own with postive and negative mixtures combine with the beliefs that their species want to follow. Players begin with one habitable planet with the idea being that there can be more planets filled with resources and all sorts. And the game runs in real time.

So overall, a pretty decent game. Not much in the way of innovation, but it does what we want it to do and gives us all the chance to create aliens and civilisations as if we were playing god in a way. So yeah a really good game worth playing on whatever device you have at your disposal. 8/10
