Random Video Game Review - Frostpunk

Finally a game with at least one part being set in my hometown. So my experience with city building games is ok I guess. I get the concept of them and try my best to make the best city possible. I guess where my knowledge comes to a halt is with how to handle taxes and other bizzare things. Though fortunately there are some games that simplfy it more than others, but I do find some enjoyment out of them. So let's take a look at another one shall we:

Set in an alternate 1886, the world has entered a volcanic winter that is close in line with the real historical 1883 eruption of Krakatoa which was a volanic event that led to global cooling (ironic that we talk about global warming now when back then it was the opposite). The result of the event leads to widespread crop failure and the loss of millions of lives. To combat this, the British created seven generators in case of a mass migration of which the player is tasked with protecting one of by making a city around it. With seven different scenarios, gameplay and the narrative can differ between each one. The base game has three scenarios while the rest came via free and paid DLC. Players set out with a small group of survivors consisting of workers, engineers, children and the like. They also get several small caches of supplies all of which can be used to build the city around the designated generator. Players can harvest for all sorts of supplies, create laws for the sake of keeping the city intact. In some of the scenarios, players can create a new religion with places of worship as well as security buildings for the sake of order. And building a workshop can help with research and building stuff that will enable your city to combat the always changing tempertures. The rest is dependant on which scenario you go for.

Personally I really like games that let you choose the scenario instead of having to play out one the developers want you to play. But often you find most gamers are ok with that anyway. I guess my big criticsm of choosing the scenario is that often you will find that each one is either far too similar or uses the same things thus making the idea of choosing said scenario to be pointless. Fortunately I don't get that in Frostpunk, but it is one of those games that's not for the faint hearted. Its challenging to play and challenging to stop. But rewarding in the sense that you are saving people from the cold with decisons that greatly impact the game overall. A good game worth playing if you want the survival city building equalivent of Dark Souls. Just be prepared for one tough game. 8/10

I guess a sequel to the first makes sense here. I mean, for the most part, this franchise is all about the subject of growing up and with ...
