Random Movie Review - Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpian's Revenge

So you may notice during this week that I'm spending more time on video game stuff than anything else. Because you know there is only so many films and TV shows you can talk about before wanting to move on to talk about something else which is my plan for this week. Having said that, we are indeed looking at a film today even though it is video game related. Now like most beloved video game franchises, Mortal Kombat has not had a great run in films with the two that came out in the 90s being pretty bad. But with DC and Hanna-Barbera doing so well with their animated films (and to a certain extent, the Looney Tunes as well), Warner Brothers decided it was time to have a crack at doing a Mortal Kombat film having acquired the property many years ago from the now defunct Midway Games. Only this time, its animated and therefore has the potential to do so much more than the live action films ever could. So let's get over there and watch this thing:

As the name implies, the film is centred on Hanzo Hasashi (aka Scorpion, reprised by Patrick Seitz from the video games) who is taking his son Satoshi (voiced by Grey Griffin) home until he gets ambushed from a group of ninjas led by someone claiming to be Sub-Zero (voiced by the legendary Steve Blum). With his family murdered, Hanzo in glorious Mortal Kombat style, kills all the ninjas before being killed himself by Sub-Zero. He finds himself in the depths of the Netherrealm and agrees to do a fighting tournament where he can exact his revenge on Sub-Zero, giving himself the name Scorpion. Meanwhile in Earthrealm, Raiden (voiced by Dave B. Mitchell) assembles a team of fighters to fight in the same tournament which will determine the fate of Earthrealm. What follows is pretty much what you would expect in the games with lots of revelations, liars revealed and plenty of blood thirsty violence, comic relief and of course fatalities.

This is in every way what a Mortal Kombat film should be. A film with plenty of violence and full of surprises. Its not a film you would want to eat something while watching because it is as gory as the games are if not a bit more. I personally really enjoyed it and although it is centred around the title character, its good to see some other familiar faces. But it does beg the question as to what they could do next if this is set out to be a series rather than just a one off film. Because there is that problem seeing as many of the other fighters from the games appear here too with some have key parts to play while others are just there for cameos and fan service. Enjoy it for what it is. 9/10
