Random Movie Review - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

I'll start this review by saying that I am among many that isn't a fan of Eurovision. I personally think that too much money is wasted on it and that countries should spend their money on more meaningful things such as for example medical services, transport and care for those who need it. But I know that it's not just a singing contest. It's also a way to celebrate the cultures of each of the competing countries and it can be considered a way for countries to come together even when we have a pandemic to face. Speaking of which, this year's event got cancelled because of that. So instead Will Ferrell gives us a film in its place which was originally meant to be a tie in to this year's events. So maybe this will be better than the actual contest. Who knows, let's just get into it:

The film focuses on Lars Erickssong (played by Ferrell) and Sigrit Ericksdóttir (played by Rachel McAdams) who live in Iceland and together form the band Fire Saga. Lars is desperate to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest and somehow out of pure luck, he and Sigrit manage to enter the local song contest which determines who would represent Iceland in the contest. Although largely seen as a joke act, they manage to become the Iceland representatives in the competition after the rest of the contestants mysteriously die in a boat party. What follows is a series of events in which friends and rivals are made, some revelations come to light and no matter what happens, Fire Saga will never be the same after it.

I had low expectations for this film just as I do for the actual event. I'm also not too keen on many Will Ferrell films as most tend to be cringy and cheesy. But there are some films in which he is actually pretty good and this is one of those films. This film has no right to be as good as it was. The comedy is good, the songs are great and somewhat meaningful, the set designs and costumes are ace and who would have thought that Pierce Brosman could play such a grumpy old man. So yeah even if you don't like the actual contest or missing it this year, this film is worth the watch if you have Netflix. 8/10
