Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated a lot since this film came out back in 1998. During that time, Hanks became one of only a few actors to gain a magnitude of acting awards while Spielberg has continued to have a lasting impact on Hollywood in general. They are both known for various roles, some more famous than others. So today we look at what is arguably their most famous and well known collaboration. A war film that became known as their first collaboration as well as the starting point for other actors such as Vin Diesel. It's also considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made and to that, I agree because if a war film made well, you're going to get some acclaim for it. So let's enter the battlefield and see how Woody handles a war torn world made by the king of blockbusters:
Set in World War II during the invasion of Normandy, United States Army Rangers Captain John H. Miller (played by Hanks) leads his squad into a search for a paratrooper known as Private First Class James Francis Ryan (played by Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon). Otherwise, known to be the last of a set of brothers whose other brothers have been killed in action. What follows is an intense amount of time as we experience war first hand as Miller's squad go about saving Private Ryan.
This film is like Die Hard in that it's one where you feel like you are right in the action as it happens. I enjoyed it both as an experience and as a film and I think it's one of Hanks and Speilberg's best works. Very happy that it became the inspiration for similar films that followed it from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan because it really is a great war film. Quite loud in places and shaky cams are to be expected. But a great film nevertheless. 9/10
