In these continuing times of uncertainty, many of us a looking towards video games as a means of escapism now more than ever. You've heard me bang on about this for so long now and it just feels that there is no end to this pandemic. We were promised a better year this year, but only time will tell if it trully was a better year for most. So here in the UK, most of us are in lockdown and are not able to go to the gym. So we look for other ways to lose weight and get those workouts and luckily Nintendo has got the fix we need. Now Nintendo are of course no strangers to fitness having had great success with the Wii Fit series of games. But with more people now using a Nintendo Switch, they thought to tailor to those gym lovers with this game. A game that combines elements typically seen in an RPG with fitness and strength training to help progress the story and whatnot. This game has been around for a while, but became popular in 2020 like some other Nintendo games released then as well as non-Nintendo games like Among Us and The Sims. So let's see what we get here:
So like with Wii Fit's Balance Board, Ring Fit Adventure has its own kind of controller in which one joycon would be attached to the ring which is the primary peripheral for the game and the other would go into a strap to wrap around your left thigh. Players get given the opportunity to warm up and cool down before and after a session using the ring controller and then throughout the game, gamers can do various things to keep the ball rolling as it were. Such things including squeezing or pulling the ring and just using it for things like squats, running and others. The story mode sees players team up with a sentient ring and go on a quest to stop an evil dragon like creature in which you navigate through various levels of varying difficulty (depending on choice of workout) and level up as you go.
One of the big drawbacks of the Wii Fit games was how it was tailored more for fitness than actual fun. Sure there were some minigames, but nothing that really blew people away. This game proves that Nintendo can make fitness fun and engaging not just to casual gamers, but hardcore gamers too due to it being half RPG and half fitness. It's great fun, gives people a good workout (I personally found it tiring) and a colourful set of levels with a decent story and great characters. If you need a workout that doesn't cost a fortune, this would be good for you. 9/10
